An enthralling view of the Kalaupapa peninsula, which being so remote and hard to reach, served as a colony for sufferers of Hansen's disease (lepresy) during the 19th and 20th centuries. There are signs along the overlook ridge that tell the history, though these are...More

Had perfect weather driving up to the overlook, viewing the settlement, and taking photos. Wanted to make the trip down, but didn't know you needed a permit, that it was 3.5 miles down, and of course back up, and that that a slide had closed...More

We attempted the visit twice, the first time a dense fog prohibited any viewing of the the peninsula. On the second visit we were able to see the small community and airstrip. Unfortunately, we did not have binoculars to identify the different buildings, but we...More

This was one of my top destinations to see on Molokai, and it did not disappoint. Molokai is part of Maui County, but the geographically isolated Kalawao/Kalaupapa peninsula on the north shore is its own county entity. It's the only county in the USA that...More

This overlook is very easy to get to. A short walk from the parking area. It gives a nice view down into Kalaupapa (bring binoculars for even better view).

Must see for the awesome view of the colony and highest sea cliffs in the world. A short walk to the overlook and a short hike to the Phallic Rock. If you are unable to secure a guided trip to the colony, this is the...More

There were about 12 in our group. Five of us hiked and the rest rode mules. It was a two hour down hike and four hours up, for us. We're in our 50s and only mild hikers. But, we made it and enjoyed the journey.
