First of all... please do not refer to Puu Pehe as "Sweetheart Rock". This is a classic case of a tourist term starting to takeover the original Hawaiian name of a place. Puu Pehe is, actually, a spectacular seastack that stands near Hulopo'e Bay... just a short walk from the Four Seasons Manele Bay Resort. This storied spot is one of the most beautiful places on the island of Lana'i. Legend has it that a beautiful Hawaiian woman, by the name of Puu Pehe, is buried on top of this remote and rugged rock formation. If you hike to the top of the cliff, overlooking Puu Pehe, you will see a structure that is, obviously, man-made... sitting atop this amazing seastack. Some say that this is the tomb where Puu Pehe is buried. I have lived on Lana'i since 1991, and this is still one of my favorite places to photograph in all of Hawaii. I've included a drone view of the site... showing a rare perspective... about 200 feet high, looking at Puu Pehe from the ocean side. If you are staying on Lana'i, don't miss a visit to this amazing place! Just be careful if you hike up the cliff trail. There are no guard rails... and the vertical drop, next to the trail, is daunting to say the least!

This unsual rock formation is a short walk from Manele Bay and the Four Seasons hotel. The view of the rock and the nearby cliff takes your breath away. The surrounding ocean landscape and tidal pools with marine life also reminds you of Hawaii of days gone by. I am from Honolulu, and these days views like this on Oahu are few and far between. The story surrounding the rock, which involves star crossed lovers, adds to the allure and mystique of the area. There is actually an old Hawaiian stone memorial on the rock, apparently dating from ancient times. I can't imagine how the ancient Hawaiians were able to build this memorial because the only way to do it is by scaling the treacherous cliff walls. On my way back from the bluff towards the beach, I saw spinner dolphins in the ocean. One warning: do not walk to the rock in the middle of the day. It was incredibly hot and there is no shade. There are also some sheer drops, so this area is not suitable for young children.

Lanai isn't big on signs, so if you don't know about this, PLEASE check it out, but don't look for the sign. From Hulopo'e Beach, walk along the left side. Please take some time to explore the wonderful tide pools! From the place where the stairs go down to the tide pools, there's a little path to the left that will take you over to a beautiful arch rock and Sweetheart rock (which we've always called Chocolate Cake rock.) This is a VERY short hike that could be done in flip-flops. Bring your camera. You will see tide pools and beautiful water and rocks, a little beach that's difficult to get to ... and of course, the great rock. NOTE: there are no rails, and some very steep cliffs. If you have children, do not let go of their hands! :-)

Sweetheart Rock is probably the most photographed area on Lanai. Once you take the walk up the nearby cliff, you will see why. The walk is less than one mile round trip --- and is a "must do" , even for day-trippers.

Puu Pehe, also referred to by locals as The Sweetheart Rock, is one of Lanai's most iconic landmarks. ... The story of Puu Pehe is a tragic one. According to Legend, a young Hawaiian warrior from Lanai captured a beautiful princess from the island of Maui, whom he would marry.

My hike to the cliff of Pu"u Pehe was the highlight of my trip to Lanai. As you approach the island, this cliff and boulder are a curious and very cool sight. Once that you are on Hulopoe beach, it is only a twenty minute walk to the top. There is a cliff ten minutes in that you should check out for ocean views. It is an easy hike, but still respect your surroundings and avoid the loose rocks near the cliff path. Once on top the views are AWESOME! You can see the monument that was built by some crazy islanders who climbed the boulder. Unbelievable and worth the hike.

This was a great walk and it was not difficult to climb. We did it with our six year old and he was fine doing the walk. Our intention for this walk was to find a geocache and with success we did find and also enjoy the beautiful views.

This is an easy walk from the Four Seasons resort, with stunning ocean views. The water is so clear that you can see tropical fish swimming in the water from the top of the cliff. Highly recommend!

There is a short hike to a point overlooking this rock... lovely to get up there as sun rises over Maui! My family did the climb down the cliffs to the Shark fin cove and went snorkeling around Sweetheart Rock where they saw an amazing variety of fish and sea turtles. I personally didn't climb down the sheer cliff which looked quite difficult to me... one can also travel around the point over lava tide pools which are quite slippery. Given that not many people snorkel around this rock!
