If you are in Waimea and have some extra time on your hands, consider checking out the Menehune Ditch and the Waimea Swining Bridge. There isn't a whole lot to do here, but you can watch water flowing in a very old ditch before walking across a swinging bridge. It is interesting to see the water channeled into a dark tunnel beneath a nearby hill. There is a plaque here explaining the name of the ditch and sharing some information on the legend of the Menehune.

After you have checked out the ditch, you can take a brief stroll across the Waimea River on a swinging bridge just across the street. True to its name, the bridge swings beneath your feet as you walk across the water. It could be somewhat intimidating to those afraid of heights or water, but it is a fun experience otherwise.

To reach this area, drive one and a third miles up Menehune Road until you see the bridge over the river on the right hand side of the road. Park along the road just before the ditch. Make sure you look up when you get there so that you can see the cacti clinging to the cliffs above you.

Followed our Shaka driving tour app to this spot. I like history and folklore so I was curious to see the remnants of the irrigation ditch engineered by the first Hawaiians. The attraction is a 2 foot plaque above the ditch.

It’s a mere five minutes from the main drag so it could be worth it if you’re a history buff! There is a suspension bridge here, too, but I didn’t cross it. It’s surely safe but the clientele and rusting cars and trucks on the other side didn’t look inviting to tourists.

The Menehune Ditch has a little sign telling you about it and the bridge is across the street. Unfortunately the parking is a little "odd" and is before the sights (no parking signs). Also - there were several people "living" on the far side of the bridge and there was a bit of an unclean odour in the area (I suspect from not cleaning up after themselves). The locals didn't seem too interested in us being there (kind of a sketchy looking area)

It's not a huge site, but it is a fascinating look into the ancient Hawaiian past. It's mysterious and an ancient engineering feat. I'm happy we stopped there - I was quite skeptical at first. The area is very local too and there are almost no tourists. Spend 20-30 minutes and then go on your way. We also continued down the road to explore the neighborhood. If you do, make sure you drive very very slowly and turn around when you get to the bend in the creek. Locals don't really want tourists back there - at least that the impression we got.

This needs more information to locate. No signs indicating a historical land mark from the main highway. We couldn’t find it using two different app maps and searching by all the names, Menehune ditch, Kiki a Ola and Peekauai ditch. Drove up and down Menehune road, took several turns into private lands, had a great adventure but never saw the structure.

Here you'll find an interesting but unexciting monument next to the Menehune Ditch, but an AWESOME swinging bridge.

Don't confuse this swinging bridge with the Swinging Bridge in Hanapepe. I like this swinging bridge better. This bridge is a functional local transportation tool. While I was visiting the bridge a guy crossed on a mini-bike and a local driving a pickup got stuck in the river. Park next to the levee and walk the bridge. On the other side you'll find a auto junk yard. Look down at the dark red water and the red soil.

My husband and I stopped to check out the ditch and walk the suspension bridge. It was a fun experience and such a quick stop it is worth the drive off the main road. History of the Menehune is interesting as well.

Of the beaten path and once you get there, there is not much parking. The "Ditch is an ancient aqueduct that appears to go through the mountain. There is a marker indicating its historic significance, but not much more to see. There is also a swinging bridge here similar to the one in Hanapepe.

I remember trying hard to find my way to the Bridge, and you drive through a lot of lower income housing areas, where people have tarps and broken down cars scattered about. The area itself wasn't as picturesque or impressive as I thought it would be. I'd honestly skip it.

A pleasant, slightly bouncy-swaying pedestrian bridge. There are nice shops in the immediate area. There is residential photo artist near the bridge on the other side that is worth a visit.
