About
This well-shaded, sinuous beach is home to one of the largest fringing reefs in Hawaii, and an excellent spot for swimming and snorkeling. It’s one of the safest beaches on Kauai, making it especially popular amongst families with kids. Green sea turtles, Hawaii’s state fish (triggerfish), and tropical reef fish are examples of common marine life you can spot in the area. For those keen on trying watersports, windsurfing is exceptionally popular due to the steady winds. Otherwise, roll out your beach gear on one of the tranquil sandy inlets and enjoy the privacy. Come early and score a picnic pavilion for splendid views. – Tripadvisor

- Don B6 contributionsGreat beach for children and snorkelingThis beach is very protected by a miles long barrier reef. The water is extremely calm, almost like a pond or lake. Swimmers tell of lots of fish including turtles to be seen snorkeling. Also great for children.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 21, 2023
- Kathleen S186 contributionsLong sandy picturesque beachGentle waves that are good for swimmers of all ages. Clear water that is perfect for snorkeling. Saw a lot of different kinds of tropical fish and my friend even got to swim with turtles. There are bathroom facilities and outdoor rinsing stations to wash off the ocean water. We liked Anini Beach so much the first time that we made a second visit to it during our Kauai stay in Lihue.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 29, 2024

Perfect for my 6 year old’s first snorkeling experience! We saw lots of fish and even a turtle. - Robertos-JourneySandpoint, Idaho89 contributionsFoil Surfers WelcomeIf you are into foil surfing with a wind sail, this is the place to go on Kauai. It is a long, thin public beach. There is plenty of shade and public bathrooms. Getting to this beach requires a bit of back tracking from the main road and a long drive through a nice neighborhood. It has crystal clear water with a sandy bottom.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 19, 2024
- Nashville_brent_65Franklin, Tennessee388 contributionsAfreakingmazingThis beach is long! The furthest section from the entrance (west, I think) is the calmer section. Shallow at parts, calmer water and less wind. Decent snorkeling; I swam alongside a turtle that was close to 6 feet long! One section over (more populated) had more wind and waves but the snorkeling is better. Go out past the red flag on the bouey to get to deeper water. I saw more fish and turtles out there. Plus there is plenty of sun and shade. They also have plenty of restrooms and outdoor showers.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 26, 2024

Please be very, very careful visiting this beach. We read reviews online and knew swimming anywhere in north shore of Kauai is a risk in winter time, but saw a lot of articles saying this beach is generally sheltered and relatively safe for snorkelling. We parked and were walking to the beach when we saw two fire trucks, EMS, and lifeguard trucks here- two people nearly drowned due to being pulled out by rip tide. Lifeguards put their own lives at risk rescuing these people. So please don’t swim anywhere you don’t see locals swimming, if you aren’t sure ask someone who looks local. Even if the ocean looks calm it can be extremely deceptive. If you aren’t a strong swimmer, rent a life jacket, and stay close to shore (waist or chest high, as long as you are strong enough to wade back to shore if needed).

Anini Beach is one of those places where Google maps can only help you up to a certain point. It's not a dot on the map. There is a campground with restroom facilities and a parking lot. But for the most part Anini is just a long string of access points to what might very well be the best beach on the island. Totally worth parking on the side of the road and having no place to change. The water is crystal clear and almost wave-less. It's shallow far far out, but not too shallow, perfect for a safe, leisurely swim or snorkeling. The bottom is sand for quite a while. Then you get coral and that's great because there's lots and lots of fish. It's truly a perfect snorkeling place. We even saw a large puffer fish. An added bonus - even though it's located on the North shore, the beach is facing westward enough that you can watch the sunset.

Anini Beach is a short 10 minutes hiking from Wyndham Ka’Eo Kai. If driving, it’s the end of the Anini Beach Road.
There’s a reef barrier that block out the big waves. A long stretch of sand for kids to play around. Long stretch of coral reefs to snorkel and see big colorful fish. When you look up the cliff, there’s the famous Makai Golf club, hole #7 and #13.
On calm days, the water is crystal clear like a piece of mirror. On rainy days, it has some waves but still safe to swim.
Many days, we had this part of the Anini Beach to ourselves.

We only spent 30 minutes or so checking out Anini Beach but it was exactly as advertised (i.e., turquoise blue, calm waters). We saw lots of people snorkeling and hydrofoil wind surfers. The area seemed to be protected from big waves and winds.
From the limited time we spent in the area, the beach itself appeared to be very small and shady. We were also there at high tide so I'm sure that made a difference. My personal preference is to be out in the sun with a decent amount of space to the next party, so this wasn't for me.

We stayed in Kapaa while on Kauai and didn't have a swimmable beach at our hotel. After visiting a view beaches, both north and south, we chose Anini to spend some time. This is a very long beach and very busy, with lots of people coming and going all day. We went around 10:00 and parked way down at the far end where you get few visitors so parking was easy. The beach has a reef pretty far out where the waves break, so for quite a distance it's very shallow and walkable. If you like to play in the waves this isn't the beach for you. It does have good access for snorkeling and paddle boarding or just laying in the sand enjoying the views. There are some public bathrooms, but also quite a few people who seem to be camping at random spots all along the upper part of the beach.

This beach was the nicest beach for snorkeling and swimming in Kauai. All other beaches’ waters were very rough looking, and we weren’t interested in trying to swim or snorkel because it seemed too dangerous, but this beach had very calm waters. When I snorkeled, I had to go out a little far from the beach in the water, but never felt in danger. I saw two turtles and a variety of fish in the water. Very clear beautiful water.
The parking was easy and the beach was lined with trees, so if you didn’t have an umbrella, you could sit in the shade. I would recommend wearing swimming shoes when first walking in the water because there were broken coral that hurt your feet until you got into deeper water and then began to swim. Restrooms weren’t the cleanest but none of the restrooms I went into anywhere on the any of the beaches were very clean. The beach was not over-crowed. Enjoyed it very much. Would go back to that beach again.

Really nice beach. We were told it would be one of the best places to snorkel. We got there early and had no problem getting a parking space. We left just before lunch and although there were a fair number of people there it did not feel crowded. The water is very calm and it would be a good beach for families or just for swimming. The water is very clear and it's a good place to snorkel. We saw a variety of fish but not as many as at some other places we had snorkeled. What made this beach different was the sea turtles. We saw 6 turtles while we were snorkeling. We were careful to keep our distance but were still able to watch them swimming . It's a nice beach for walking too. Plenty of shady areas if you don't want to sit in the sun. There are outdoor showers to rinse the salt water off and the bathrooms are clean.

Be careful if ur in the backend of Anini beach. Best to swim where there are lifeguards was an advice our kayak guide gave us.
We didn’t see the sign about where the current was, saw all the swimmers giving a false sense of safety and went snorkeling here from recommendation online
The current was so strong we couldn’t swim or snorkel, there was no fish but there were turtles. About 50-100ft ahead of us was a group of snorkelers but cause of the current we turned back. About 10-15 minutes later the group returned but a 59ur old Arizona visitor didn’t return and multiple agencies have been searching for him since. There is NO reception here so we couldn’t call 911 for help and delayed rescue…Was absolutely heartbreaking seeing his wife on the beach.
Please be careful always swim where there’s a life guard and don’t swim alone.

We camped here a couple nights this January. In the winter they can get more rain on the North side, but we also always had some sunshine as well. The beach is beautiful and mostly protected by a reef from the waves. Camping is dispersed with concrete picnic tables spread around as well as a few wooden tables. There are outdoor showers and enclosed restrooms. Plenty of parking and a long, quiet beach.

Hello, I would be a solo traveler. Are there any tour companies that do snorkeling expeditions for individuals or small groups?
Written May 4, 2021
Which part of Anini Beach did you find was the best for snorkeling?
Written June 16, 2019
We snorkeled about 60 yards to the right of the big tree in the water. Lots of wish and coral.
Written June 18, 2019
Is it a far walk from the parking lot to the actual beach?
Written April 25, 2019
How far a walk is it from parking lot to the beach area and can it be done with a rollator walker?
Written April 25, 2019
Depends on weather of course and which lot you park in but there are flat grass surfaces with natural tree debris on them that one can ambulated through. Definitely worth the visit!
Written April 26, 2019
We went early in the morning and parking wasn't an issue. It did fill up fast as the day went on. There was more parking than at some of the beaches in the area.

Hello. We are looking for some great snorkeling beaches in Kauai that are still open after the rain closures that are also kid friendly. Thanks
Written June 11, 2018
Poipou beach park and Anini were our favorites when we went a month ago. Many others were still closed, but may be open now.

Hi, is this beach open? Is there a brown water advisory here? Is there any damage from the flood waters? We are planning a trip in about 3 weeks and would like to know what to expect. Thank you
Written May 14, 2018
I was just at Anini May6th/7th. It didn’t appear to have any damage at all. We camped about 15 feet from the ocean. The water was clear so it should be nice for your trip!

I am traveling to Kauai around the 1st of June and wanted to know how anini Beach was after there flooding? I like to snorkel there because there is usually turtles but was wondering if the water was brown and foggy from being stirred up by the storm.
Written May 7, 2018
We were just there snorkeled on May 14th, clean and clear water. Probably your best best for snorkeling in all of Kauai right now since tunnels and Keke as well as Lydgate are all inaccessible at this point.

My friends and I wanna camp at Anini beach. The question is what is the easiest and cheapest way to get there from the airport ? We already looked for Uber but it’s not available any other ideas ?
Written February 14, 2018
Looks like a long stretch to beach. Where does everyone recommend to go? Some say to the "right of the boat ramp" but where is the boat ramp?
Written December 24, 2017
Just drive to the end of the road and then go back to the area you think you would like the best. Closest to the main road, rougher waves and rocky. Then there is the beach park. Past the beach park, calm and shallow. It is all beautiful.
