We followed along with a driving app that took us up on the mountain range. It talked about how you could chose to buy property at the bottom of the ridge or up at the top depending on the different climate you wanted to live in. They said that this part of the island didn't get as much rain as other parts especially close to the shoreline but as we went up on top, there were expansive views of rolling green hills and horses out in the pasture. The change of the climate as the clouds rolled by was stunning. In fact, as we got down from the mountain and headed to the coast, we came across a most gorgeous rainbow.

The road between Waimea and Hawi, with it's high elevation views of the Pacific, the coast line, rolling green pastures, and Maui in the distance, as well as fantastic views of the volcanoes Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa (both can be snow-capped in the winter), and Hualalai is indeed extremely beautiful and "camera-worthy". At about 20 miles length over a windy, paved two lane highway lined in places by "iron wood trees" (casuarina equistifolia) it's a wonderful drive, best taken a modest pace. HOWEVER, be aware that the local folk use the road to travel between Waimea and Hawi and they do not appreciate "slow poke" tourists, so be courteous and pull to the side so they can get to work/school/Star Bucks on time. Another important consideration: the shoulders on the road are non-existent in places, so BIKERS BEWARE, as the cars do come flying around the corners. If you feel you need to make a statement for "biker's rights" by peddling up the middle of the road, you may inadvertently find yourself making said statement from the hood of some rancher's pick-up truck.

I had the good fortune of living in North Kohala for three months at the end of 2017. This area is absolutely beautiful and unspoiled. Old Hawaii.

Magical ride with rainbows and beautiful scenery and vistas. If you are compelled to stop, be mindful as this is a well used road, pulling over to the shoulder or a turn out is a must. You will not believe you are in Hawaii and can experience a variety of weather in a 30 minute adventure.

Beautiful but scary at night. Actually drove back up Hwy 250 another day to see more of the beautiful things we missed once the sun set.

The first time we drove this road we could not believe we were in Hawaii !! It is such beautiful ranch country !! We love driving along here to see the cattle, the sheep, the horses, the goat, the ranches, the pasture views and then there are the "long distance" views of the ocean. MAGICAL !!

Have never been anywhere else where you can see such contrasting views in one place. From some of the pull offs on HWY 250 you see pasture, ocean, black volcanic rock and every in between in one picture. Breath taking! Take your time, watch for other drivers who have pulled off and cyclists riding up and down the narrow roads.

I can't add much to the other reviews here. It's like being in alpine meadows, with temperatures in the sixties, gentle breezes, meadows and streams, and views up and down the coast.

if it weren't for the big blue ocean on the left, I would have sworn I was in Montana cattle country. Same open feel, cows everywhere, horses too. Beautiful drive.
