Really pretty to drive through. Lots of picture spots and a couple of old ruins sites. There’s a small town that has shops and a great place to eat inside the little general store. Great coffee shop too.

Very impressive scenery, much better than staying in Kailua-Kona. We loved ranches and the beautiful beaches. Its clear why it is a very expensive place to live.

The drive along the Kohala Coast is best way to learn and experience Hawaiian lifestyle, culture and history. There are many historic sites and trails and sacred temples (heiau). Drive through luxurious resorts and state parks with lovely beaches and trails. Enjoy scenic viewpoints of the ocean, lava fields, and volcanoes. The main roads along the west coast are Highway #19 (Queen Kaahumanu Highway) and #270 (Akoni Pule Highway) . Kailua-Kona is the centre of the west coast and has a multitude of resturants and shops, hotels and vacation homes to rent. Highway #11 (Mamalahoa Highway) heads south along the coast. It is just a few hours drive to the east coast of the Big Island.

We stayed hear for 3 weeks, and felt the climate was fantastic, the beaches were the best on the island and we could visit everywhere from here. The drive to volcanoes was a long day. However, other than volcanoes, everything else is here, sun, sand sea. The drive up to hawi ends up being quite a hoot!! Goodness knows what the road line painters were doing, the lines are wobbly! Incredible to see and worth the drive in itself.

This is a lovely area but it is a bit resort-y for our tastes
