While there is a road sign telling you when to turn off of the main highway linking Kona and Volcano, you are then pretty much left to fend for yourself. There were no other signs after that. We mistakenly drove to the end of the road where there is a parking lot and locals charging $20 for a shuttle ride along the 3 mile path to get to what turned out to be the green sand beach. A helpful local directed us to return to the fork in the road and go right instead of left and we found what we believe was the southernmost point in the US, although again no sign. Another local said there was a sign but someone took it.
Nice views of the coast and the chance to brag make this a nice spot to visit if you have the time.

I went in the early morning with family to see a partial solar eclipse, and stayed for awhile to watch creatures in the tide pools. Not an easy place to get to if you have a physical disability or small kids; requires a bit of hiking. However, you will get bragging rights for having been at the southernmost point of the USA.

The road to South Point is a little rough, or very rough if you attempt any of the off-road paths. The view of the ocean is spectacular! People camp here, fish, and even jump off the cliff into the water many feet below. You have to climb a rickety ladder back up to the top. It’s a fascinating place and the locals enjoy it as well. There are porto potties to use, but no other conveniences are available. So be prepared if you plan to spend any lengthy of time there.

About an hour and a half from Kona, but well worth it. Windy as heck, but cool to see the turbulent oceans meet at the southern point. The younger crowd were getting their thrills jumping off the cliffs, while locals were fishing from the cliff side. All in all, an active little area. Walk to the navigation tower and follow the brick wall into the ocean - that’s as southern as it gets. Loved this place.

Here you will be able to see the power of nature at work where wind swept currents from the east run into the currents from the west creating very rough and confused seas propagating in very high shorebreaks. The winds blows here constantly, so as I have been told and at a good clip that I can attest to. This area would make a good location for viewing sunrises and sunsets. No services available at this spot, but nearby.

Through the ever changing topography of the Big Island you make your way to the true southernmost point in the US. After fields with cows and horses grazing, you arrive to the most stunning cliffs with a uniquely blue water. It is very windy and creates massive wave breaks. Aside from getting "the photo," this spot captivated me with it's grandeur and beauty. Definitely worth the detour.

Longish detour for nothing really. No signs to state the significance of the point. Fisherman close by and an area where you can get into the sea to swim or Kayak.

It requires somewhat luck to get here. We wanted to find the southernmost point of the US. There wasn't really nothing, no sign, even though we make sure that it was the right place.

Great views nearby. When you visit- get away from the main area and view the cliffs. The actual South Point spot is a bit dirty and the views are ok. But very close by are spectacular views.
