What a great place to visit. The sand was a bit hot but we saw turtles in the water and on the beach. It was a great drive down the coast to the beach and we stopped at the Shaka Restaurant for lunch. Very nice.

It's a strange experience seeing black sand, but this beach is lovely. We walked along the rocky area and looked in the tide pools. There were lots of crabs and fish to see. We also enjoyed watching the turtles swimming in the surf. This would...More

We visited this beautiful black sand beach in order to see the sea turtles. This trip, we only saw two, but it was definitely worth the stop. Plus the black sand is gorgeous. There is a nice picnic area. It doesn't seem like it would...More

We spent quite some time here. Most mornings I had 3 turtles circling, enjoying breakfast. My kids enjoyed the small tide pools in front of the gift shop. Make sure to wear protective shoes as the Black Sand gets very hot. Swell picks up in...More

Stunning views and shimmering black sand make this beach a standout. Come view the turtles, and see the beautiful beach. A great stop before the volcano.

Beautiful black sand beach! One of our favorite sights to see while vacationing on the Big Island. A highlight of the beach are the green sea turtles sunbathing. A must see while visiting the Big Island!

Like many other places in Hawaii, it's breathtaking. There were no turtles when I was here, but just seeing the waves hitting the beautiful black sand, with the palm trees behind the beach, is a great feeling.

We stopped here on the way to the volcano from kona. It was worth the stop to see the black sand beach. We didn't see any turtles when we stopped They only had Porta potties which my husband said they were gross.

We come to the big island every year and we always try to make it to the Black Sand Beach to see the turtles. There were not very many here this year, but it is such a great place.

This is a gorgeous beach with sea turtles that come out of the ocean so that their shells will harden. This gives them some protection from the sharks, their natural predator. Worth a trip. Wear protective shoes or water shoes.

There was adequate parking during our visit. That said, there where still loads of tour buses filled with Chines tour groups.

We went swimming for sure. It definitely is a little rough though so not great for real little ones or for those that are not good swimmers. Both of my children, 13 and 11, had no problem but they're both very good... More

We were there mid day and saw 2 large turtles resting right on shore for awhile and we saw quite a few turtles swimming very close to the shallow shore. I think people would be able to see turtles morning or afternoon.
