It had been raining almost all morning near the volcano. We decided to do the drive to escape the rain. The further we drove, the sunnier it got. We went all the way to the end to see the sea arch and then the petrogyphs. We did not make any other stops on the way back up. Worth the drive... More

Amazing views and the Lava Fields and incredible cinder cones and old vents along the way. Make sure to check out the arch at the bottom. We did it at sunset but it would be even better at sunrise.

We did this trip after a couple of hours in the VNP. There are several stops along the 18 miles out to the sea arch. We drove straight thru to the arch and then picked a couple of stops on the way back. There are bathrooms at the arch. It can be very windy. If you stop a little before... More

During a recent visit to Volcanoes National Park on Big Island, Hawaii we followed the Chain of Craters Rd. We had traveled on this road all around the mountain when we visited 11 years ago, parts of the road are closed now due to 2008 volcano eruptions which brought lava spewing over parts of this road! How interesting to re-visit... More

We drove part way down chain of craters road. It was amazing. There are lay-bys at intervals down the road where you can pull over to view cast lava flows that have decimated everything in their path. The contrast between this and the lush rainforest outside the national park is stark. We took loads of photos.

Like many people our visit to the volcanoes seemed a disappointment with no flowing lava to see. This drive was awesome. The many pull offs gave us a clear view of the power of nature ant the aftermath of massive eruptions. Topping it all off was the last stop giving us a look at the edge of the big island... More

The Chain of Craters Road is about a 22 mile ride from the Visitor's Center. It was worth the ride to the end of the road which takes you to the ocean. It was fun just walking around at the end of the road.

We almost didn't go because of the 20 mike drive to get down. Not only was the arch amazing, but the views along the drive were breathtaking. As we headed back up the temperature changed by 20 degrees. Rainy at the volcano and sunny with blue sky by water. It was very cool!

To me, the chain of craters road is the jewel of Volcano's National Park. The views and vista's are breath taking. It is well worth spending a couple hours driving its length. My only "minor" disappointment is that they are putting in an emergency access road to Pahoa at the end of the road where the big lava flow had... More

Beautiful drive through first several craters on the side of the road, then across lava fields where you can see for miles to the ocean. Make sure you go down to the ocean if its a beautiful day as its a very pretty drive.
