This is a wonderful scenic route that will occupy about 4 hours of your time. If it’s raining, keep on driving, chances are it will change as you drop in altitude towards the ocean. Plenty of scenic pullouts and hikes to satisfy everyone. Despite continuous light rain, we still managed to hike to the petroglyphs and the sea arch. Plenty of other worthwhile quick pullovers for photo opportunities. And lots of native Nene’s along the road!…

The Chain of Craters Road is open and well paved. There are plenty of markers showing earlier lava flows. Very few visitors because of covid so not much traffic.

It was amazing to see how man is insignificant to the power of nature. We were in awe of the beauty and destruction that resulted from the 2018 lava flow. It was an easy drive, but might be kind of boring for kids- so take a lot of pit stops and get out and climb around. Also, make sure you have drinking water with you- not many opportunities to stop for refreshments.…

It was the third time we visited the Volcanos National Parc. Everytime we rediscovered the unique landscape of amazing frozen lava, craters and lava tube. Very impressed by the lava field covering the former highway. Never had the luck watching the glowing lava flowing into the ocean! Highly recommended this amazing adventure.…
