Don't go to the park and not take the time to drive this route. My husband didn't quite get it. He thought it was just another road to a crater. He was in awe. There are many lava flows to see and several areas to stop for points of interest. Don't miss it.

Most people take a photo of the sea arch at the end of the road. However, for the best photo, stop at the unmarked pullout as soon as the road reaches the coast. You need to walk out onto the lava (but not right to the edge) to get the whole view. You can see huge caverns worn into the... More

Beautiful drive! We went all the way to the Arch and it was so worth it! We met a few people who had hiked further to a closer point to where the Lava was flowing into the ocean. We weren't prepared for that and since we'd already done the helicopter ride. We chose not to do the hike.

After doing a far bit of hiking the day before, we decided to take a ride down Chain of Craters road. It's a fun and sometimes windy road through the southern portion of the National Park with pullouts to see various craters and scenic overlooks. There are also trail heads to look at petroglyphs or take on more arduous hikes.... More

This was my second time on Big Island and to the Volcanoes National park. It was in July and very hot. This time, there was hot lava flowing towards the sea and we walked the chain of crater road early morning to see that. It was a long 11 miles walk from the parking lot to the lava flows and... There are few places on earth you will ever visit that look like this. It is truly unbelievable. To just imagine how much lava has flowed over time to create this landscape is mind boggling. Take the road all the way to the end (45 min) to see the sea arch, and to get as close as you can drive... More

I thought this would be a relatively quick drive in, drive out, make a couple of quick stops scenic drive, but we ended up spending about 4 hours driving to the coast and back and marveling at all the different lava fields and formations. The sea arch at the end was a bonus we'd forgotten about. Take food and beverage... More

We've been here twice before and always go to the park and do this drive. This time we downloaded an app called Shaka Hawaii. You do not need cell service or your data plan it works based on your phones GPS. It begins in Hilo and takes you all the way to the end of the road. It gives you... More

This is a great drive with some amazing views. All we did was drive down and back + getting out for some of the viewpoints. Highly recommended.

Probably one of our most favorite things....it looks like a foreign land...but beautiful. The wind was crazy at times and the weather changes super fast...from hot and sunny rainy. We did several hikes along the way and luckily, at the bottom, beside the ranger station, there was a little snack shop. it was crowded parking at the bottom but worth... More
