The actual swamp and boardwalk area is nice for a 2 to 3 hours of exploring, but if you get out into the surrounding constructed ponds area and canal, this is a much more open and unshaded area where a whole day can be spent walking around the pools. Be warned it can get very hot with only limited areas to find some shade, and we were beaten down by the heat and sun, so take plenty of water. The swamp area is much more shaded. We did see as many different wading birds in the pond area as I was expecting, but this could have been the time of year and time of day. We did an osprey flying and moorhens in the canal. We walked ~ 3 or 4 miles but the sun and heat really got to us in the open canal area so we plan to visit again in the fall to explore the swamp and river area in more detail when some of the vegetation dies down for better views from the boardwalks and viewing areas. I would have liked the visitor center to have a little more detail on where best to view wildlife and the different types to see. Overall rather a nature preserve than a swamp but I can't wait to come back again at a different time of the year. Great place for photographers.

I had allotted 2 hours for my girlfriend and a friend of ours to do the small loop along the boardwalk, north and then back around to the parking lot. Only a few miles! No problem!

Well, the problem was... I didn't account for us wanting to stop and look at everything so much. It was a beautiful day, we were taking pictures of just about everything, moving along the boardwalk a few feet at a time. And while all of this is wonderful... it means we didn't make it through more than a quarter of the planned route before needing to turn around and head back to the car, because we had someplace else we needed to be.

Is this a bad thing? Not at all! It just means that we'll definitely be coming back, and plan on spending a solid 4 or 5 hours there, instead. Now, if you're not one to stop and take in scenery too much, or anything of that variety... then that will make your visit easier.

Beautiful place, though, overall! Definitely recommend checking it out and enjoying a stroll, casual or otherwise!

This was a family visit (all adults) and our first. A family group with elementary school age children entered in front of us - it looked as though everyone was having a good time. The trails were well laid out with information about what we were seeing. Overall, an informative and relaxing visit.

I had not been to Phinizy in several years. I was very disappointed in how much it has deteriorated. I know that the COVID-19 crisis has impacted them, since the staff is not there. However, much of what I saw was not the result of a couple of months absence but years of neglect. It's a beautiful location and still a nice place to go for a walk. However, many of the boards in the boardwalks are rotted and there were holes in a couple of places on the Rain Garden trail. Trees had fallen over trails and had to be carefully navigated. The saddest part to me was the old cemetery, which dates to the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The last time I was there, the enclosure was mowed and all the gravestones were in good repair. Today, it was a tangle of vines and overgrowth. It was much too dangerous to enter and walk around. It seemed disrespectful of the people who once owned the land.

We went here for a quick visit and ended up spending more time than we thought we would. The boardwalk areas were neat, although some areas are in need of repair, so watch were you step! We wandered off he boardwalk and onto the grassy berm areas. That is where we saw quite a few gators in the water. They were entertaining to watch. They seemed to be watching us as much as we were watching them! We also saw may turtles, birds, and even 2 snakes. There are restrooms and a visitor center. I would definitely go here again!

This is a dog friendly place which is what made us go there. We were traveling and our German Shepard needed some exercise. Because we visited in March everything was pretty dead and brown.

I have visited swampy areas in the spring, summer and fall and found them to be quite pretty in their own way. A different time of year would obviously provide better scenery.

With that said we enjoyed walking the wooden board walk trails and saw turtles and birds. Some people we ran into said they saw a couple of snakes and a gator in the water but we didn't see any.

I would say if you want a little exercise with your dog or kids it is an activity that you could do for an hour or two. They had a small park like area for kids by their visitor center which was closed due to COVID I think.

I want on New Year's Day - what a great way to start the year. Well marked trails - beautiful vistas. Can't comment on summer visits - might be hot or buggy . . but so much to see in the winter. Can't recommend it highly enough.

We took our 5yr old and she loved it! We all did. Be prepared to take water, have walking shoes, and a camera! This place did not disappoint! The walking trails are well kept and easy to maneuver- however, there was a large tree across the path. It didn’t prevent us from continuing but could for some folks.

I wasn’t wild about visiting but my husband wanted to. I was pleasantly surprised. There are a number of trails and you can walk as long or little as you want. If you park in the first lot you come to, a short (1/4? Mile boardwalk) will take you to the visitor center complex. You could also drive there. There are picnic tables, restrooms, a nice playground for kiddos and a visitor center (which was closed the day we went). From there, you can walk along boardwalks, on levee type banks, and around lakes. There are lots of birds to see. We didn’t see any other wildlife (except a few turtles), but it was still fun. A great way to spend 1-2 hours on a nice day.

The park had flooding but still lots of areas to walk. We could not use the boardwalk from the 1st parking lot up the visitor center because part of it was underwater. Nice walk up the road and we saw a Snowy Egret as we crossed the bridge. Visite the visitor center and spoke with a very nice lady who gave us some helpful information and told us about an old cemetery back up near the parking lot. We did the boardwalk then took a right out to the fields. Heard lots of birds but only saw a Female Painted Bunting, Song Sparrows, and an Osprey sitting atop a pole nest site. Walked back towards the car then took the Beech(?) trail to visit the old cemetery. lovely upland forest and the history of the cemetery is on a kiosk right beside the cemetery.
