Beautiful wildlife refuge
Jul 2019
I visited the Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge on a tour by a local guide and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The ride on the little train into the refuge was very pleasant. During the motor boat part of the tour, the guide pointed out a wide variety of wildlife, including boat-billed herons, an agami heron, kingfishers, cormorants, little blue herons, oropendolas, bats, a tamandua, and howler monkeys. Later on, via kayak, we spotted additional bird species and white-faced capuchins. If one is spending time near La Ceiba, it is a must to visit this wildlife refuge.

Great but better do it with a tour operatour
Feb 2019 • Family
Great area. We saw monkeys, 2 crocodiles and many birds. But the trains goes trough a rather poor area. We did with a Tourist Options tour for 51 $ per person (entrance and train tickets including) and it felt totally safe and we could enjoy it fully. Ask them to leave at 6:30am to catch the 7am train as you'll see much more animals this way.

As always in Honduras we were the only people there around.

Just the train is worth it, but seeing the animals and going through the lagunes was great.

The beach, nobody there, is just 5min away. So if you need to wait for the train, then you can go for a swim.

Peaceful and wonderful
Dec 2018
As part of our birding package with the Pico Bonito Lodge, we were taken there by guide Elmer Escoto. Awesome experience. We were able to get up close and personal with Boat-billed Herons, a juvenile Agami Heron, Sungrebes, crocodiles, and much more. The 9km ride to the refuge on the 1912 train is a hoot. Can't wait to go back.

Great birding location - try to take the 7am train for 40 minute ride
Dec 2018 • Couples
It is a great natural reserve located just a few minutes from the community of LA Union (about 10 minutes from La Ceiba). The place is great for a relax boat ride; it is a prime location for Birding, you can see Boat-bill Heron, Wood Storks, and other 150+ species
Keep in mind you have to take a small little train - no cars are allowed - so get to the departure place before 7am to take 7am ride so you get there earlier in morning if you are there for birding
last train leaves at 2:40pm - there is a home where you can have lunch

A great wildlife refuge with a lot of history
Nov 2018 • Family
From the entrance to the Cuero y Salado wildlife refuge you will see it is a different and original site. A funky, old banana railroad will take you through a 30 minute ride into the heart of the refuge. once there, you can choose between a boat ride or a canoe to paddle through the estuary and mangrove canals. Enjoy the howler and capuchin monkeys, as well as scores of resident and migrating birds in the area. They even have a basic hostel like facility to spend the night. This will give you a better chance to see the elusive manatees that live in the refuge! Definitively a must visit attraction in La Ceiba.

Great place for birds and mammals
Feb 2018
It is a fun trip, traveling on a tiny train then exploring by boat. You can see a lot of water birds, caiman, bats, monkeys and iguanas. If you ask to go to look for manatees you might see these mammals coming up to breathe.

Great trip, beautiful place
Oct 2018 • Family
The train ride from La Union to the park is entertaining especially for little kids. It’s an old timey train that was setup by the Standard Fruit Company. When we went it was running every 2 hours starting at 7 am. The ride lasts around 45 mins. The last one back from the park to La Union was at 2:40 pm.

The boat rides there last about 2 hours we got to see lots of birds and a few howler monkeys. We did not get to see any crocodiles but our guide mentioned that some days it’s easier to see them. There is also a population of around 50-60 manatees.

The overall experience was great. The natural beauty is spectacular. Prices were affordable. We had two young kids (under 5) and they had a good time.

There is a place to buy drinks and some food close to the visitor center, but I would take my own food or just buy things there that are packaged.

Brilliant wildlife by train and boat
Feb 2018 • Couples
This place will appeal to anyone who enjoys wildlife. We were lucky enough to see a wide range of animals including bats and a highlight for us was an Agami Heron. The boat trip is an absolute must. You get to the river / beach by a brilliant narrow gauge train which allows you to great views of the landscape and we managed to see storks and raptors along the way. A fantastic fun day out with spectacular wildlife.

Bird Lovers Paradise

We have visited this wildlife refuge twice. The train ride alone is worth the trip. Open air cars, and tracks that aren't exactly straight, but interesting. The train ride is about 40 minutes into the park where you can hire a guide to take you on a boat through the mangroves. They know the area and are good "spotters" for the wildlife. We have seen many different birds, a variety of monkeys, Caymans and crocs, small bats, and iguanias, but no manatees. You catch the train in La Union, which is a short distance from the town of La Ceiba. Be sure you have Honduran money with you, as they are very particular about US currency. Even a bill with a small tear will not be accepted.

very nice
Jan 2018 • Family
it is worth a trip. the ride with the old train is nice and you can see many birds and other species.

tipp: you might don't need a guide cause the captain of the little boats know the birds and spots even better and can indicate them as well... (requires spanish!)
