A unique bit of local history

It was pretty cool to see the stairs and how the statues were incorporated into the stairs. It's too bad that the government gave some of them away.

This stairway is part of the overall Copan ruins complex. A must visit while in Copan, very historic and worth the price of admission. A guide is good so you can get detailed explanations. We also added on the tunnels tour. A little pricey but once in a lifetime experience where you can spend hours. Very nice bathrooms at the... More

I have been reading about, and looking forward to seeing, this unique stairway for years. I wasn't disappointed. Not only are there 30-ish stiars composed of blocks of hieroglyphs, there are also several large statues incorporated into the stairway. Very impressive! Go to the 1890's Peabody Museum photo exhbit in the town's municipal building (off the main park) to learn... More

We hired a guide, Julio Melendez who spoke excellent English and had worked on the excavation--in fact so had his father and grandfather. this particular part of the ruins is unique and being protected. It's amazing what the Mayans did and this is a great example of their culture and abilities.

Be sure to use the guide to talk you through the sights. You must experience this attraction. No words or photos can relay how impressive this is. Simply AMAZING!

The Copan ruins need a whole day for you to explore. The hieroglyphic stairway is one of the two "must-see's" at Copan. The other is Alter Q. The stairway has a covered canopy to preserve it from the elements. It is a wonderful place to rest and contemplate the people who climbed those stairs in the past,

Covered area to protect the stairway. Really cool history, went on a guided tour. Much bigger in real life than we expected it would be.

The best part of the whole tour for us was seeing the Scarlet Mcaws in flight in flocks of 5 or 6 birds. Really spectacular when they flew over the ruins. The ruins are nice. I hate to use such a bland word, but we really had high expectations that just weren't met. For some unknown reason they've used galvanized... More

The staircase has the longest continuous hieroglyphic text written in stone in the American continent. A must-see for any Maya enthusiast.
