Mayatan School Tour

Copan Ruinas, Honduras
About Mayatan School Tour
Socially-responsible tourists have a blast touring Mayatan Bilingual School, where they drop in on classes, talk with local kids in English, and learn about how this women-founded, volunteer-staffed, scholarship school is changing the future of this rural community. Mayatan frequently hosts scheduled tours, and we also welcome tourists who just decide to drop in. We're located on the road that goes to the Bird Park, just a 5 minute taxi ride from downtown Copan. Your minimum $5 donation will go towards our scholarship program, ask about our longer tours that include lunch with a few of our high school students!

On a recent Roads Scholar tour to Latin America, our group spent a few hours touring this school which is K thru 12 and where English is the primary language. It is located in Copan, not far from the Mayan ruins. Our group even had a opportunity to have lunch with two of the high school students and to hear their stories. I was very impressed by the program which is staffed primarily by young adults from the US. The school provides many scholarships and a high percentage of graduates go on to college. I would encourage anyone visiting the area to stop by and see the place for yourselves.

As part of the Road Scholar "The Maya & More" tour in September, 2014 we visited the Mayatan Bilingual School in Copan Ruinas, Honduras. It was an uplifting experience to tour the school and meet with the students and faculty and to watch happy children of all ages diligently applying themselves to the study of English and other subjects. We ate lunch with a several of the older students and were amazed at their fluency and knowledge of world affairs. Bill Fairchild, Colorado
