We had a choice to make - the hot springs or Macaw Mountain on our one day in Copan. I think we made the right decision as we really enjoyed this bird sanctuary. I didn’t think we would stay very long but about 90 minutes just flew by. It’s a very nice nature walk and you can even paddle in the stream before you leave. Well laid out and so many beautiful birds. This is a must visit if you’re in town to see the Mayan ruins and have a little time to spare.
Tip - a tuk tuk from town will cost $5 but have the driver wait for you and pay him the $10 round trip fare when he drops you back in town/ at your hotel.

This is a must see if you come to Copan.
The sanctuary is doing a lot of good work in rehabilitation as well as education. This is not a zoo.
The place was lovely with clearly marked trails and signs written in English so there is no need for a guide.
We were lucky enough to be the only people aside from staff there at the time so it was very peaceful but even on a busier day with the shady overhangs and benches I imagine it would be very chill.
The entry fee is a quite reasonable $10usd per person.

Had wondeful 4 hours at the reserve. Birds all looked well cared for. Signs around park in Spanish and English. Birds feed at 1200 so be at the cafe where you’ll be surrounded by macaws. Had refreshing dip in the river at the reserve.. access bit basic. Thoroughly recommend a visit here. Great value for money and a short cheap tuk tuk ride from centre of copan.

If you're visiting the ruins then this place has to be on your list as it's just a short taxi ride out of the town.
If you have seen the macaws at the ruins then you'll probably know that this is where they come from. The tour takes you around a well structured bird park that is positioned in a picturesque valley with a river running through the centre.
There are loads of native birds kept in large cages and it's great to be able to see the work that goes in to the rehabilitation and release of many of these beautiful animals.
They have a small gift shop and cafe on-site so you can sit and enjoy a coffee and a snack surrounded by birds!

Had a wonderful morning here and was really surprised at how beautiful it was - the sanctuary feels part of its jungle surroundings and was beautifully maintained and natural. The huge river running through the middle is really impressive too! Lovely cafe at the end of the walking trail. Would absolutely recommend this to anyone visiting Copan, and is well worth the short walk from the centre of town!

Loved visiting this place to see all the beautiful birds. But if you are limited for time and only go there to see the macaws, then go to the Ruins and at the entry, you will find dozens of birds flying around you, giving you plenty of photo opportunities. I got so many beautiful photos at the reserve, and even a lot with me in the photo and the birds behind me, perched on a tree right at my shoulder. Awesome experience.

We stopped here after visiting the ruins. Our tour guide had recommended it.
We enjoyed the place a lot. We spent about an hour there and saw a wide variety of tropical birds that have been rescued from the pet trade. There were various macaws, toucans parrots and other species. Most will be released to the wild.
You should make a point to visit here if you’re in Copan Ruinas as it’s very impressive.

It is amazing what Macaw Mountain Bird Park has accomplished in reintroducing macaws to Copan. If you come to Copan you should definitely visit this place. If you cannot come, please consider donating to their effort. It is so wonderful seeing these birds flying free in their natural habitat. Covid has impacted their funding because fewer people have visited the park. This is such a unique and special place that needs our support to continue.

We enjoyed this more than I thought we would. The birds are really great to see, and I appreciate the mission of the place -- it started by taking in birds the owners couldn't have any longer. It's nicely laid out, and the admission seemed to be a fair price for the nice experience. We took a tuk-tuk to & from town and that worked out great. They let you be photographed with some of the birds at no additional cost, which was pretty fun.

Walking is a very big part of this tour. Each guide as a slant about the birds. The layout is well worth the time and their is so much to see and learn. Will take a good hour or more but not to stenious but it is up and down. Seeing the birds and hearing the lessons was great. Take water with you and their are facilities on the tour.
