We spent 3 wonderful, relaxing days in Utila. Great food, easy to get around, friendly, safe and not as expensive as other Bay Islands.

I visited Utila for 10 days in June, no one seemed to have much information on what to expect. Here are some things. 1. It’s crazy humid and electricity is generally pre-paid. So be prepared to have windows opened, make sure the house or place...More

Very romantic spot. Not the best snorkeling site but it looks like paradise so if you want to lay by the beach or swim I really recommend going, especially if you go with your SO.

Spent three nights there and loved walking up and down the village, eating fresh fish (and chatting with the fisherman who caught it) and feeling the sundown breeze. A very happy, friendly place. I would avoid the Hotel Kayla and look to rent a house...More

Utila is a very well kept secret --- better than Roatan. For divers, it is the perfect place for calm dives. For tourists and winter birds, it is the ideal place for a long vacation. Locals are very welcoming, everything is near and the prices...More

On the cays you can stay at one of three hotels: Hotel Kayla, Hotel Kayla II or Hotel Lonestar... Higher-end home rentals are available on Utila's south shore right across from the cays: Treasure Beach (Coral House and... More

Belize for a novice (10 Replies)
Hoping to take advantage of discount rates from Houston. Will be traveling with 2 daughters ages 18 & 23. Youngest is adventurous and the oldest wants to be at the beach most of the time. And I am a large woman who loves to do everything but concerned the restrictions. We have never considered going so we don't know a lot and don't have a lot of time to plan. So, I guess I am asking for any information you can offer. Where should we stay -- the Cays or on the mainland or can we should we...More

Depending on how many mainland based trips you'll want to do, its usually a better idea to split your trip between the two areas and see both worlds of Belize. I am partial to the Cayo district for the Mayan sites, rainforest, caves, zip lines, river and horse trips, waterfalls and people. Or you can stay on the beach on Ambergris or Placencia and take day trips to the mainland, closer to and less money from Placencia.

Sailing and Snorkeling the Reefs on the Cays in Belize (8 Replies)
There are Two areas in Belize that are the best for Snorkeling the Reefs, one of course is the well protected national park near Cay Caulker, this is all by local tourist companies. As a Private sail boat traveling thru Belize waters, You are not allowed to pull up to a morring ball, jump off your boat and snorkel the reefs. You must first go to the tourist office, get a permit to enter the park, and then you must hire a Belize Captain to sail your boat into and out of the park, you may sail...More

To my knowledge you cannot get a temporary boat permit for Hol Chan. This is normally an annual permit for a Belizean registered vessel. Have you actually gotten a temp permit?

share sailboat or catamaran in January (0 Replies)
We are going to rent a 39 ft. catamaran with a skipper and sail the Belize Cays for a week in January between the 9th and the end of the month. It would be around $3000 to rent the second cabin for the week. This will be our second time there, and we are easygoing, fishing, snorkeling honeymooners in our mid 50's. It will be fun with more people and someone else to share the cost, around $7400 total. Please let us know if you would like more info. A single hull would be about $2000 for the...More
