I have heard the expression "VALET DIVING" (sometimes called Diva Diving!!) thrown around over the years -- this is the first time I have actually EXPERIENCED it at its PERFECTION. I visited with my college-aged daughters for 4 days of diving and we were BLOWN AWAY. The incredibly accommodating dive staff took care of our every need from planned equipment rentals to an emergency computer rental when my battery died! Every piece of equipment including wetsuits, fins, regs, BCDs -- everything! - was taken off the boat every day, rinsed and hung to dry in our individual lockers. All we had to do was show up in the morning, pull on a wetsuit, and get on the boat! I truly appreciate the small boat experience and the personal attention that affords. Most importantly, the diving was SAFE at all times. We visited during some very windy and rough times and the dive staff went above and beyond (thank you RON!!!) to make sure the sites we visited were accessible and as clear as they could be. The rough water meant getting back on the boat at the end of each dive was challenging -- the Barefoot Divers went above and beyond to make sure we were safe and it went as smoothly as possible. And the SEA HORSE was a special treat!! Stephanie in the office was professional and accommodating. Harris - thanks for your help in the front office!! Gary, the general manager was truly available, even when we needed some 7 am early morning assistance! We stayed in one of the oceanfront villas and it was perfect for us - space to be together and also sleep well, each in our own beds! The kitchen was far better stocked than I would have ever imagined - a garlic press?! - including a full American-sized refrigerator and full cooktop. At 5 pm every day, we watched sand crabs come out of their holes and scuttle along the sand, busy and industrious. Be aware that there are sand flies down on the beach and stay covered!

My review is about the diving only, as I did not stay at this resort. I was supposed to dive Mary's Place today, but it was so rough and choppy at the surface that I just couldn't catch my breath and relax enough to dive. I had to abort the dive. I am an experienced cold water diver and have lived on a boat for 6 years in the Pacific Northwest. Six foot chop and white caps is not good for diving. I am a petite woman and it was too much for me to handle. The men managed to dive, but my husband got only 38 minutes and finished with 1500 psi left in his tank that started at 2800 psi. And I didn't dive at all, and tired not to puke waiting in rough seas. They charged an extra $20 for BCD rental, and the regulator setup did not include a depth gauge! For all this crappy experience, we were still charged full price for the dives, plus rental of BCs, plus tax, to a grand total of $120 US (for 1/2 a dive!) When conditions are so bad, they should have warned me. They should know their local waters and weather conditions. Obviously, no concern for my welfare. The dive guide was not interested or helpful. We arrived early, and were permitted to snorkel in front of the resort. The coral is all dead. Glad I'm not staying there. I would never go there to dive or snorkel again.

Response from Gary L, General Manager at Barefoot Divers
Responded Feb 4, 2020
We at Barefoot Divers do our best to keep all our divers safe, and the conditions were moderate that day. Unfortunately, no amount of waves are enjoyable when you're sitting on a dive boat for an extended period of time as opposed to diving as planned. We certainly do our best to fully attend to the needs of every guest under all circumstances, but unfortunately sometimes we don't read the mood of our divers as correctly as we'd like. We are sorry we weren't as in tune as we should have been, and that your experience was not as we most assuredly would have wished for you. Before leaving us after his dive your husband told us he loved his Mary's Place diving experience with us and planned to return; I only hope we'll have the opportunity at some time in the future to provide you with the kind of service and enjoyment that keeps our guests returning to dive with us again and again.

I can't say enough good things about Barefoot Divers Lodge and Dive Center. I brought my adult son for a week in January 2020, and though the weather was unusually feisty that week, we had a glorious adventure and still got in ten dives during our stay. We really enjoyed staying in the Dive Lodge above the shop; the room was spacious and well-set up. The staff was friendly, accommodating and bent over backwards to anticipate and help us with our every need. It was great to have our own personal dive lockers and freshly washed wetsuits and gear awaiting us at the beginning of each day. Stephanie at the front office is a champion communicator, answered all our questions before our arrival and was very helpful when my son decided to join me at the last minute in what I thought would be a solo dive vacation. There was no extra charge, and though he arrived a day ahead of me, there was no charge for his early use of our suite. We opted for the 10-meal package at the onsite restaurant and the food was excellent! We appreciated the onsite security and the guards were also quite helpful when it came to helping out with odd tasks. General Manager Gary is a delightful gentleman, also went to extremes to help me out when he should have been done for the day! The dive operation is well run, with good boats that come back to the resort between the morning dives; a very nice touch. They're located very near to one of my favorite dive sites ever: Mary's Place, listed as one of the top dive spots in the world. Also saw my first seahorse; a true thrill. My son really enjoyed finishing off his PADI OW, AOW and NITROX certifications with Danny, his VERY patient instructor. Another nice touch is that if you want to get a ride into town for the evening, your driver will stay in town and wait for you so he can take you home again. I found I preferred to stay at the lodge; it so relaxing and pleasant a place. I would be so happy to return and dive here again!

We did 4 dives with Barefoot Divers during our stay. Two on July 26 and two on July 28. They were absolutely fantastic. Ron was our guide for all dives. Ron has a lot of energy and knowledge and we really enjoyed our time with him. We saw a nurse shark, sea horses, puffer fish, trumpet fish, thousand-year-old sponges, a school of cenets, lion fish, flamingo tongue, fire worms, and more…all between 30 and 90 feet deep. The scenery was incredible and the diving was probably the highlight of our trip. On our last dive, there were a total of 9 customers (including me and my wife) but only one Dive Master (Ron). That is a bit much for one Dive Master, so the dive was shorter, he had to check on air consumption frequently, and he didn’t have the opportunity to look and point out as many things. I would recommend that Barefoot Divers regulate the number of customers per Dive Master. I would think that 4-5 customers per Dive Master would be the max….for optimal safety and so that the customers get their money’s worth. But other than that, the diving was fantastic. The gear, the safety, and the instruction were all great. And the dive sites were only a short boat ride away from the Barefoot Cay resort, so we were able to return and take breaks in between dives. It was a fantastic experience and we can’t wait to return and dive with them again.

I am a PADI certified divemaster who chose this resort for my son's 5-week PADI divemaster apprenticeship program. During the final week of the apprenticeship, I booked myself as a guest lodger/diver. I rate this as one of my best, most relaxing and most enjoyable dive vacations. The dive shop provides outstanding service, training programs and facilities. This shop/lodge is not located in the more popular "west end" of the island, but the dive sites (all within a 5-20 minute boat ride) were absolutely spectacular. This PADI 5 star operator deserves more stars! I highly recommend Roatan as a dive destination and Barefoot Divers Roatan as a service provider.
