Wife & I took the Humanitarian Tour to Livingston & up the Rio Dulce on 12/17/21 (a Friday). The weather was fantastic. We were met right on the pier (Riviera, Oceania Cruises) and left for Livingston by nice boat ride. Then the trip up the river. School was out so we took side trips up two tributaries to see the Mayan people in their villages. Fascinating stop at a store where they were cooking food. Bring your own TP! We also stopped by the hot springs and we took the cave tour up the hill. Then back to Livingston for a short walk about town in the locals' own area, not the touristy areas. We did NOT do lunch. Our tour guide was worth the price of admission alone. Fun, knowledgeable, caring. He really tried to expose us to the people & places as they actually exist in a caring manner.

Walked off the ship and joined a ;Go With Gus Tour' of Colonial Antigua.,. Israel was our guide and Victor was our driver. Both excelled at their jobs. On the way to Antigua Israel gave us a detailed history of his country. His English was excellent. He had such a way with words. Excellent guide. Don't miss this tour!

We had not heard of Go With Gus tours before our cruise line stopped at this port but we feel very fortunate to have found them at the port. We had a great time on this tour where we were able to see the countryside, the local living, hand made clothing, local city sights and more! It was by far the best tour. We also loved the fact that it only had 7 people in the van which made it so much more personal. Never book the cruise excursions. Go with Gus instead!! :)

We had booked transfer services to/ from Antigua while our cruise was in port. Our group all wanted to do different things once in Antigua, so we were happy to find an operator willing to get us all there an back.

The Pros:
We returned to the ship on time.

The Cons:
When we arrived at the terminal, we were immediately loaded onto a shared bus with a number of other people not part of our group. As we drove to Antigua, it became clear that the guide (who was wonderful and not at all to blame) was giving a guided tour to the other people in the bus and was not aware that our group had only paid for transportation. He did his best to accommodate us and give the other guests the tour they paid for (while trying to get us to join his tour- which would have been fine had we not already paid for other tours in Antigua). As a result of not having the transfer service that we were expecting, some members of our group had to cut their own plans short by over an hour in order for us to meet the rest of the group when they wanted to return back to port.

So yes, Go With Gus got us there and back. But not without some undue stress at trying to reconfigure plans on the fly.

First problem: I contacted Gus via his website and was instructed to wire money for a private tour for 4 people I had requested. Gus claims his website has been hacked (seems he already knew this problem with his website, yet didn't take down or repair his website).Claims he never received the money so I paid AGAIN via Shorefox, a company out of Miami. I am out over $200 over and above what we paid for the tour. Suspicious.

Second Problem: I had requested a PRIVATE 4 hour tour of a banana plantation and a boat ride, with no lunch, to which Gus agreed. When we arrived in port, he loaded us onto a boat with over 20 other people- exactly the type of excursion we did NOT want. He then took us to his hotel where he tried to pressure us into eating lunch with the group. We sat in the hotel while the others had lunch, then waited on the boat for them to finish lunch and touring. We were out for over 5 1/2 hours. My travelling companions were annoyed that this was not the excursion that was agreed to. We did not go to the banana plantation on this boat tour.
Gus should not have promised us a private tour if he had no plans of delivering the goods. He did try to keep us happy, but this was not the tour we had wanted or agreed to. There is nothing to do in Santo Thomas on one's own as far as touring that is safe, so we went along on this tour as we would have had nothing to do all day otherwise, but this was definitely NOT the excursion we had requested and Gus had agreed to provide.

Consider yourself warned.

A friend recommended the trip up the Rio Dulce with the tour company Go With Gus as the best shore trip she had taken of all the shore trips in all the countries on all of the cruises she had been on. High praise indeed, but after arranging and taking the same trip on our recent 1 month long voyage, I have to say it was the best of the 13 trips that we took (some arranged by us, and some arranged through the ship's Field Office) in 6 different ports.

Simply taking a boat trip up the incredibly scenic Rio Dulce would have been a memorable trip, and probably worth the cost just for that, but all of the different stops along the river, and the friendly, solicitous guides Marlon and Ira (Gus's wife) are what really made the trip special.

Since our ship was leaving later in the day than is usual for criuse ships, we arranged ahead of time with Gus to extend the usual trip and add in an additional stop further up the Rio Dulce (for an additional fee to cover the extra gas) at the Spanish Fortress of San Felipe.

Trip Synopsis: Ira and Marlon picked us up at our ship in St Tomas de Castilla, and took us across the scenic Amatique Bay to the town of Livingston for a brief stop before heading up the Rio Dulce which passes through a steep-walled canyon covered with rainforest. Along the river, the boat would stop to see wildlife or hear some of the history of the location or to interact with a passing local that they knew. We exited the river canyon and crossed a sizable lake, El Golfete, to the far end where we passed beneath the longest bridge in Central America and stopped shortly thereafter to tour the Spanish Fortress of San Felipe. (The fortress itself is very interesting, and if you don't have time for a river trip, you can at least take a bus to the Fortress, but you'll miss alot.)

On the way back down river we first stopped at a mayan fishing settlement for a homemade flour tortilla with black beans and salsa, followed by a stop for a swim at hot springs right at the side of the river (where some of us also explored a nearby cave), followed by a stop at a river-side two-room school where we had the chance to talk with and interact with the students. The last stop was back in the town of Livingston where we had a delicious meal followed by a performance by a Garifuna Band and a chance to explore the town of Livingston before reboarding the boat for a ride back across the bay to our ship.

One of the people on our trip had gone on a very similar tour the previous day that was arranged by the ship's field office through a different tour operator. According to her there was almost no comparison between the previous day's tour and the one with Go With Gus.

I heard good reviews about Going With Gus Tours on Trip Advisor. This was the only reason we decided to visit their booth when we disembarked in Santo Tomas De Castilla, Guatemala. We decided to do the waterfalls hike tour through the rainforest. They hired a cab driver to take us 20 minutes from port to Las Escobas which is a rainforest that consists of trails and waterfalls. Once on the trail with local guides, we were disappointed as there were no waterfalls! The local guide said it was due to the late start of the rain season (we were there May 12, 2016). The travel agent for Go With Gus Tours failed to tell us that; the whole reason we took this tour was to see WATERFALLS. The trip back to port with the cab driver was interesting. Once we reached the port, he played the old trick of needing change for a $20 bill. I had two $10 bills, one had a small tear in it. The driver said he could not take this bill. He already had one of the $10 bills in his shirt pocket and wanted his $20 back. He took the $20 back but did not give me back the $10 bill. This is a SCAM folks! Since he would not give me my $10 bill back and wanted to act innocent, I proceeded to go back to the tour booth since he was hired through Go With Gus Tours. After explaining to the agent my dilemma, she did not seemed surprised. We could not find the driver so she did honor my request and gave me $10 and said she would take it out of the driver's pay.
If you decide to take this tour, please ask if waterfalls are actually overflowing with water and be careful of the cab drivers.

I just returned from a Western Caribbean cruise today, and I wanted to make sure to give Gus a great review ASAP! We took a tour of the Rio Dulce and Livingston with Gus and tour guide Hugo out of the Santo Tomas de Castilla port in Guatamala with our three kids, ages 11, 8, and 6. Not only was this a great cultural experience, we had a great time. Gus and his wife greeted us like we were family as we got off our cruise ship and found him at his booth. Even though I had read great reviews about Gus, before the trip I was a bit worried about not booking a tour through the cruise ship. While I have been to other ports where you have to leave the terminal to check into non-ship organized excursions, his company is right there in the terminal itself, inside the air conditioned building right in front of the cruise ship. His tour actually left in the water just a few yards in front of the ship's docking lines. Gus makes orchestrating this tour, which involves a lot of different stops and requires the cooperation of different local peoples, appear seamless - I know it isn't that easy but he makes it look that way. You will enjoy it best if you just sit back and let him take care of giving you a good tour for the day, as there does appear to be some improvisation. We started with a beautiful water taxi ride to his hotel, where we sampled local fruit, they gave us all bottled water, and we made our selections for the upcoming lunch. We then took the boat to the local school, where we gave the kids school supplies and toys, and the children sang us some songs. From there, Gus surprised us with a quick detour to look at some Mayan ruins and some locals putting on a traditional Mayan ceremony. This wasn't initially on the tour schedule, but we were so glad to have the opportunity to see this! We then picked up the boat where we cruised the scenic Rio Dulce, we landed at a market where we sampled hand made tortillas and salsa, drank water right from a coconut, and bought crafts from the local children who came up to our boat with their canoes. After a scenic ride back through the Rio Dulce we had a really great lunch at Gus' hotel - and let me tell you, even my kids ate the fish and chicken, and we all raved about the flavors! Finally we took a quick tour through the city of Livingston before returning to the port. If you are looking for something different than the every day cruise shore excursion, and you want to see some real local culture and maybe even give back a little during your cruise - Go with Gus! Also, I would like to give a shout out to Hugo, our tour guide, who is from Guatamala but spent time in the United States training to become a tour guide. He takes his job very seriously, and he is definitely a professional. One other thing to note - Gus has several different website with contact us forms and e-mail addresses. I tried a few of these unsucessfully before I finally found the right one - and once I did he was very prompt in answering all my questions before I booked the tour. Be sure to use his gmail account gustavo.turcios@gmail.com which is how I finally contacted him. He also seems to book tours at the port itself when the ships arrive.

Guatemala-Went with Go with Gus tours to Antigua. Was a great tour but they told us there would only be 10 in the van and at the last minute shoved 4 more in. Also when they took our fare they said he said he had no change and the other fellow would gives us our change which he never did. Other couples had the same experience.
Have used Gus at the other port and it was a great tour.
Hope Gus reads this and has a talk with his people at this port.
It was a great tour but tarnished by these people actions.

In March 2013 we emailed a couple of tour companies to help us with a very special tour. We have close friends in Guatemala City and were very excited to be returning for a day during our spring break cruise. We needed a tour company who would help us with all the details. Our friends would be traveling from Guatemala City to Puerto Barrios via bus and we wanted to take care of all of the arrangements. Doing this from the US with limited Spanish was becoming difficult. From the very first email, Gus was extremely responsive and always assured us that everything would be fine. Gus and his team, purchased the bus tickets for our friends, picked them up at the bus terminal the evening before we arrived and took them to his hotel. The next morning he brought them to the cruise terminal for our reunion. Everything went perfectly! We spent the whole day with him and his team on the Rio Dulce excursion. The tour was well organized and we loved seeing the river. The highlight was visiting an small village and sharing gifts (toothbrushes and school supplies) which we had brought specifically for this tour. At the end of the day, he took our friends back to his hotel for another evening and coordinated their return arrangements.

Gus runs an awesome tour company with the absolute nicest and most professional staff. Our reunion with our close friends was incredible due to Gus's friendliness and trust in us.

If you are considering a excursion in Puerto Barrios / Livingston-you have to use Gus! He is unbelievable!
