This place is unique. We went and toured the lake with a private guide from Rain Forest Tours, and it was fabulous. He showed us all these hidden spots that were off the grid. We watched a lesson on how they make cotton thread for local textiles, drank local coffee and visited locals in their homes. The lake has a... More

Be sure to Stay on Lake Atitlan for a few days if you're in Guatemeala - you'll likely want to stay longer. We stayed at La Iguana Perdida (an upscale hostel) in Santa Cruz couldn't recommend more. Beautiful, relaxing, welcoming and comfortable.

This is one of the most beautiful places I have seen. We stayed in San Pedro which is a very charming little, lakeside town. Coming into Pana, we took the water taxi to San Pedro. We grabbed some lunch at the water's edge bar and grill then off to find a hotel. We got an amazing deal at the San... More

This is a big lake with a lot of communities around. You have to travel to Solola and take a bus to Panajachel, from Panajachel you can take a boat ride to reach the others communities. This lake is breathtaking and you can use a kayak to spend sometime or swim at it. There's a lot of hotels and hostels... More

A nice day out worth the early start. Really enjoyed it here. Got to visit 3 villages around the lake, all different. Surrounded by volcanoes great views. Lots of markets plenty of places to eat grab a coffee and have a drink.

I am letting visitors to Lake Atitlan in on a little secret. San Juan womens co op market. This is the best fair trade market I have ever been to. I seriously think this is where Anthropology gets all of their home wears and scarves. The women and children hand dye the fabrics and make the most magnificent items. Buy... More

We took a boat tour and crossed Lake Atitlan on a mostly sunny day. As we approached shore, everyone began looking up and taking pictures of a dozen or so colorful hang gliders. Most were two-seaters where a tourist was accompanied by an expert pilot. I am not sure where they launched from. There were plenty of updrafts as the... More

We walked around Lake Atitlan for a good couple of hours - through villages, incredible scenery - and then took boats over to the markets for lunch and a look around. This was my second visit to Guatemala, but my first to Lake Atitlan. I will definitely be back and am SO glad we went. Don't visit Guatemala without spending... More

Lake Atitlan was the highlight of my trip to Guatemala. The lake, itself, is breathtaking! There are quite a few vendors who will go to great lengths to sell you local handicrafts, but you can always so no.
