Constructed in 1929 (at the time of the US stock market crash and beginning of the Great Depression) by the Yurrita family as a private church, this captivating structure has an ornate maroon tower and stonemasonry. The architecture is a mélange of styles from neo-Gothic to Baroque. Many think it resembles the work of Antoni Gaudí, the famous Spanish architect, particularly in Barcelona. This church is also known as La Capilla de Nuestra Señora de las Angustias (the Chapel of Our Lady of Anguish). There’s no admission charge for the 20-minute tour of the architecturally significant interior, though some think the mishmash is a bit gaudy.

A cross between one of "Mad" Ludwig's castles on the Rhine and the Bates Motel, this mishmash of styles is unforgettable.

Getting inside takes finding out when it is open, but even just seeing the outside is worth it. A family built Catholic Church that is in use for masses as well as weddings, etc., it is amazing architecture. Look at a million pictures on google, then go see it in person. It's even better.

This is a Catholic Church and religious center built between 1927 and 1941, by Felipe Yurrita, utilizing ALL of his favorite architectural styles. Nobody seems to know why the cross at the top of the steeple is awry. Dedicated to Our Lady of the Anguishes, it was Felipe's offering of thanksgiving for having survived a disastrous earthquake in 1902. Ironically, he died 5 mos after the church was completed. I viewed it only from the outside, while traveling with a small tour group.

Only was able to see it from the outside. The gothic look and detail in the architecture are amazing. Really wish I could have gone inside.

The exterior of this church is worth the trip to see it. It is one of the few places we were able to walk by in Guatemala City. Unfortunately it was not open when I was there, so I did not get a chance to peek inside, but the outside alone was definitely worth seeing.

The church is seldom open but its history is really interesting as it is a private church. It is beautiful with incredible architectural details and I saw many people taking pictures of it.

This is a church that you won't be able to take your eyes off. It is beautiful with many, many architectural details. Even though the inside isn't open most days, it is well worth the time to stop and admire the exterior.

I've never seen anything like the exterior of this church. Would have liked to have seen the interior but it wasn't open. Looks like something you would find in San Francisco, CA!
