About
Miraflores Museum is the first Site Museum in Guatemala City. Located right where the Ancient Maya City of Kaminaljuyu was. It has one of the best archaeological collections of Guatemala's Valley. The Museum has 2 halls with permanent exhibitions -displaying archaeological artifacts- one showroom for temporary expositions -devoted mostly to contemporary art- and a big garden where local botanical species can be seen. A Precolumbian burial was reproduced underground, just below the pyramid, making the visit a whole new experience. At the entrance, the Museum welcomes you with a scale model of the Great City of Kaminaljuyu. The visitor may relate the ancient buildings -buried under the actual city- with the nowadays streets and avenues. Kaminaljuyu was one of the most importat cities due to commerce, obsidian was the main product of trade throughout Mesoamerica. Miraflores Museum is the place to visit if you want to know the origins of Guatemala City and more about our history.

The new building was slated to open several days after Guatemala was closed due to Covid restrictions. It was done so to protect the visitors, staff, and especially the children who will flock to this place. It is "hands on" and designed to teach and learn. A tribute to Mayans and lessons for all. It will be an amazing experience for all ages when the museum does open it's doors. Hopefully soon.

Lots of English translations, including a very affordable little booklet with additional material in it. Lots of interactive exhibits that can be enjoyed by adults and children alike. The videos and games were especially entertaining!

The staff were very friendly and helped us practice Spanish (Walter 💛) and work on our Mayan math capabilities.

The museum is attached to a shopping mall with lots of restaurants and we were able to leave our suitcases at the museum so we wouldn't have to haul them to lunch.

The view from the roof is great too!

This is a MUST SEE if you're interested in Mayan culture and history.

This is a fantastic museum that we stumbled upon while thinking we were merely heading to the mall to walk a bit. It really made our day. The collection of Mayan artifacts was incredible and the museum is very modern, both architecturally and in terms of museum curation. Everything has both English and Spanish explanations and must have been a significant investment of time and resources. I’m guessing this is a relatively recent renovation because friends who live across the street from the mall were surprised to see all of our photos and videos from the museum. There are 4 floors to visit, including the underground tunnel to the burial site and a contemporary art exhibit, as well as a number of interactive exhibits. There’s also a rooftop viewing area. Afterwards, you can climb to the top of the mound for photos.

Very interesting to know the tomb under the miraflores area. The spaces designed by recreating the stories and scenes where the mounds and everything discovered were located. I also add a lot of value to the guide that showed us each part and element of the museum.

Beautiful museum dedicated to the preservation of pieces and the history of Kaminaljuyu, an ancient Mayan city now completely buried under the great city of Guatemala.

The museum is also architecturally beautiful and has direct access to the Miraflores shopping center and a beautiful park.

Be sure to visit it and see above all:
1) the view from the roof, with the imposing volcano on the horizon.

2) the basement, where you can see archaeological remains found at that same site.

In addition, they close until 7pm and then you can continue having fun in the restaurants or cinemas of the Shopping Center.

It is worth visiting slowly, touching many objects, watching videos and learning so much about the history. It is a place for any age and level of knowledge about the Mayan culture. One of the best museums in Guatemala.

It is felt that the museum team organizes many interesting and fun activities, putting a lot of effort to make it as accessible as possible for everyone, children and adults. It combines fascinating ancient pieces, many free walking spaces, exhibitions or interactive games. Thank you very much, what a beautiful museum!

The most interesting experience has been touching and playing with a rubber ball similar to the one used by the ancient inhabitants of Guatemala.

In the museum there is an immense collection of stone axes that ball players used for ritual purposes. All the pieces are well preserved and polished and represent the faces of parrots, monkeys, bats and poor warriors who were going to die if they won or lost.

On the second level, a beautiful closed warehouse with glass walls barely allows you to glimpse the valuable pieces of Mayan pottery stored there.

In the end, some questions remain:

Why does a private collection have pieces of inestimable value?

Why are these pieces, like those from other private museums in Guatemala, not kept in the National Museum of Archaeology?

How did those pieces get here?

And who knows how many Mayan artifacts ended up in other private collections around the world?

The museum is very complete, it has very impressive and varied pieces of art, which is appreciated. The experience allows us to measure the magnificent and complex nature of the development of the Mayan civilization. The staff is very friendly and the guide was very kind and gave us a lot of information
