La Merced holds most of the treasures that were taken from the original Merced church in Antigua after the earthquakes in the 18th century. The neoclassic style building is almost too small to house all the paintings. Take special care of the shrine of Santo Judas directly to the right of the entrance. Many people go there and pray.

For me it is one of the most beautiful churches in the city, its is quite big and has several good side altars. The problem is the parking in the area. The Jesuits are the ones in charge of this church and it is a very restful and amazing church.

If you’re visiting Antigua, It’s worth a visit to see the ancient paintings and icons of the church. It is not worth a special trip only for La Merced iñunless irs Holy Week or u less you’re coming for religious reasons. I enjoy the serenity inside and the antique decor when we are in the city.

If you like historic places and religious buildings, La Merced is right for you! The best day to visit is on wenesdays because in this Church you will find the miracaulos: San Judas Tadeo, and specially in this day you will see a lot of sales specially for worship him.
If you are a beliver buy the ninth for pray and you will me amezed of the results.
Near this Church, if you like tasting the real flavor of Guatemala, there are 1 or 2 little cafeterias where you will find a refreshing and tastful beverage called "Fresco de Suchiles" made of a mix of fruits of Guatemala.

We went to Guatemala for Holy Week. What a treat?! This church is along the route and has it's own procession. The processions of men and women carrying block long barges of sorts carrying mannequins of Christ or May by shoulder for many blocks. The 'rutas' that are created for the procession to walk on with flowers, sand and color grain are amazing and only last until they are walked over by the people carrying the barge like items.

The churches are the main attractions in Guatemala City and all are worth seeing, even though the imposing architecture doesn't quite match with the rather bland interiors.

A beautiful example of a colonial church has it could have been seen in Antigua Guatemala during colonial time.. As the church has been transported from Antigua to Guatemala after the city has been moved to Guatemala City

We are staying at the Barcelo close to the airport. The church is about 1.5km away - would it be safe to walk there during the daytime?
Written November 3, 2018
Absolutely. Live nearby and been here over seven years. The Uber cost would be minimal or a cab (ask Barcelo for car) would cost 25 Quetzales.

I did not ask a question about an attraction, I asked a question about my religion. Could you please forward my desperate letter to your Monseigneur?
How can I connect the highest priest who speaks English?
Written August 6, 2018
Then you're looking for that answer in the wrong place, this page is to review attractions. But I think if you want to contact him, you should go, or send someone to the church, i'm sure they can give you a better answer

My grand-daughter, Pauline, 9 years old, has been baptised, but does not know God because her mother went out with bad people and lost her faith. Two years ago, Pauline asked me if I believed in Jesus, I responded yes, and she told me that she too. But her mother does not want her to know Jesus. I would like Pauline to know Jesus and to go to Christmas mass. She speaks English. What can I do ?

Exitos¡
