Large Catholic Church
Dec 2019
We took Uber from our hotel (Westin) and started our walk in Zone 1 from San Francisco Church. From here, you have a pedestrian zone that leads you to Central Park / Plaza. We also visited the Cathedral of Guatemala and La Merced Church which are all in Zone 1.

Wonderful church both outside and in.
Feb 2019 • Solo
This is more on the outskirts of the city, but not a very long walk. It is set in a large courtyard, with superb trees, both the main and the side facades are wonderful. The interior of the church is just as beautiful, with interesting sculptures and reredos, sadly, at the moment the reredos of the main altar has been removed, temporarily I hope, and there is a photographic facsimile in its place. However, this is a church which is much used by its parishioners, so it is hard of access for a lot of the day, it is usually open to tourists in the later afternoon.

Beautiful Huge Church
Dec 2016 • Friends
We actually attended a funeral at the Iglesia. I asked our travel tour guide about the beautiful colors of curtains, cloths, etc. in each church we saw, as they all looked brand new. He informed me that the churches change the color of their decor with the seasons! A beautiful way to pray!

Definitely worth seeing, although be prepared for a somewhat disappointing interior compared with the imposing exterior.

Another church on my way to Cathedral....
Nov 2015 • Solo
Walking from my hotel to the Metropolitan Cathedral, I passed by this church. There was a mass going on which I joined.
After the mass ended I took some pictures of its altar and its other beautiful sections.

Before leaving the church, I approached the priest to greet him. He said that he does not speak Spanish so we said our greetings in English. Que bueno!

Note: some of the reviews posted here refer to the San Francisco Church in Antigua. This section is for the San Francisco Church located in the historic areas of GUATEMALA CITY!

Beautiful Colonial Church!
Apr 2014 • Solo
I visited La Iglesia de San Francisco as the town of Antigua was getting ready to celebrate their Easter or "semana Santa" week which is famously known. The Church is beautiful, great representation of the Spanish Colonial times. The images of the saints, Jesus and Mary are beautiful detailed. During my visit I could see that they had in front of some of the altars the typical decorations they use to decorate the streets of Antigua during Easter celebration which consists of different colored sand in patterns that looks like a carpet adorned with fruits. I am not sure the meaning of it but I am sure it has to have some meaning. It looks to me like the result of the blend of Catholicism with Mayan believes. It is beautiful, worth the visit!

Beautiful Church
Feb 2014 • Solo
Great Catholic Church, beautiful cathedral. Has a black Jesus that Pope John Paul visited. Across the Central Parque and the National Palace. Be careful as there are many pickpockets in the area.

Always wonder how much good the $ would have done for the people instead of for the fancy church. That being said, folks were there praying...
