About
Maya House of Cacao is a chocolate museum describing the history of chocolate in the Mayan culture. Maya House of Cacao was built in partnership with the European Union and the Toledo Cacao Growers Association with a goal to share with the world the history and culture of cacao in Belize from its early origins, all the way to the present day. At the Maya House of Cacao, we have been able to bring in real-life tools and exhibits related to cacao growing, harvesting, and production of chocolate in order to show the public an informative and engaging museum that is enjoyable for all ages. At the museum, visitors can enjoy the incredible history surrounding the origin of cacao, and how it is used today to create a treat loved by millions from all around the world: chocolate. While you're here, why not go through the processes of creating your own? We have staff available to guide you through each step of the chocolate making process, from bean to bar. Whether you're a history buff or a chocolate fanatic, or even a bit of both, the Maya House of Cacao is sure to delight and open up the fascinating world of Mayan cacao and chocolate. We would love to see you here soon!

made my own chocolate - what could be better?
May 2017 • Friends
Interesting, hands-on experience. Learned about making chocolate from seed to finished product. Family operated and run. No more Hershey or any milk chocolate for me anymore.

Learn about Chocolate
May 2017 • Friends
Although not fully up and running when I visited, the Maya House of Cacao was a great place to visit to learn more about the chocolate making process. If you are interested in learning more about the Maya people and the traditional process of making chocolate, you should check this out. Also, proceeds go to support a great nonprofit in the area, which supports Maya communities and the Belize environment by making sure organic, fair trade cacao is grown. Overall great place to go.

A must visit
Apr 2016 • Business
This is definitely a place to visit. It is a museum about chocolate. Inside is ultra modern and they also show you how to make chocolate from the cacao/cocoa beans. The place is not too far from Punta Gorda town. If you do not have a tour planned to it and wish to see it you can contact the owners, an organisation called TCGA who will arrange a trip for you (this is how I got there). The Mayan Chocolate Museum is on its way to the archaeological site - Lubaantun. Again, worth a visit.

WOW! Orlando our tour guide is knowledgeable and willing to share cacao farming practise of the area. The displays were professionally done and artifacts nice to look at. By the time you go you will see local made products and get to do taste testing...... By the chocolate it was great. Orlando also shared with us this knowledge of the loca area, we visited the rio blanco water fall and local Mayan villages for purchasing of local crafts and food. Everyone speech prefect English and willing to share their stories. Loved the air conditioning building and nice wash rooms, just finishing the bean processing building out behind....... Make sure you go there!!!!!

Highlight of a cocoa filled week
Feb 2016 • Friends
We were thrilled to be among the early birds who got a tour of this lovely museum before it was hardly open. (And apparently it is destined to add many more features in the near future.) Much of our week in friendly Toledo district was about cocoa and we "ate it up." Such an integral part of the history of this authentic Mayan area. Our museum tour guide, Orlando, was terrific and so helpful in directing us to other cocoa attractions in Toledeo. This is a "don't miss" stop.

First of all the building and the inside is very nice. Our museum guide was so full of passion about his culture (mayan) and the whole cacao industry. It was just fascinating because I had no idea where chocolate actually comes from. There was even a chocolate tasting! Great people, great service - Thank you Maya House of Cacao!
