Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave Tour and Picnic

273 reviews
Step into the world of the ancient Maya on a tour of Actun Tunichil Muknal, hiking and wading deep into a series of tunnels, chambers, and passageways. Support from an experienced cave guide ensures a safe trip into—and back out of—the maze-like cave network, where you’ll find the "Crystal Maiden," the crystallized remains of an ancient ceremonial victim.

What a wonderful site. Right in San Ignacio. I visited solo and had the whole place to myself. Lots of parts to explore and visit for an hour. Quite beautiful and peaceful

This is a beautiful site. We enjoyed having it all to ourselves on the morning we went. Each plaza at the site is clearly marked and you are free to climb anything you want. We spend about an hour exploring at a leisurely pace. There are many trees surrounding the site, which makes it possible to stay in filtered sunlight for most of the visit.

Weve been to many Mayan ruins- Cahal Pech is small but well preserved. Its quite close to Xunantunich, so easily done the same day. Nice place to explore up and down steps and through hallways. Check out the tomb. Have fun!

We visited Xunantunich first, and the guide told us we needed to do Cahal Pech before we left town, and it was the best recommendation we got all trip. The site was stunning. Quiet and peaceful, it was incredibly to walk around and explore, especially since we had the entire site to ourselves while we were there. Costs $10bz per person, and we spent about an hour there. Do some reading on the site online before you go, especially if you plan on doing it without a guide.

We were to be married at Xunantunich, but the river was flooded, so our alternate location was Cahal Pech. I'm so glad we were married there. The site is spectacular! And even more ancient than Xunantunich. It looks truly like a lost world, and with travel down because of Covid we had the whole location to ourselves. It may not have the high grandeur of lofty Xunantunich vistas, but what it lacks in that regard it more than makes up for in intimacy. Shrouded by the jungle, wrapped in mystery and seclusion. A magical place like very few I've experienced. It's located surprising close to San Ignacio town, so it's incredibly easy to get to. Parking very close to the site itself, so no hiking required. If you are near there is a must. If you are not, make the detour!
