My fiancée and I booked the ATM Cave Tour through our hostel on the evening we arrived, we didn't know what tour operator was going to be conducting the tour. We rushed the booking as we had some potential weather coming in that may have prevented booking days later.
I must say I believe we lucked out! We we collected on time( a tad early in fact) and were part of a group of 7 in a tidy modern van, comfortable and with Aircon. The guide Philip was too notch from the getgo, as we pulled away from the hostel he began explains out day in detail and continuing giving us history on the Mayan civilization in detail. Answered all out questions and was so very friendly and polite. The trip was about an hour to the cave most on paved road, some on dirt road. No cameras allowed due to a tourist damaging a skull in 2012 I think. Be prepared to get wet, you won't need anything with you from when you leave the bus in the carpark. You can't wear bikinis etc so just tshirt and shorts oh and water shoes if you have them other wise regular trainers (quick drying kind is best, see further on) this is a sacred cave remember. They also prefer no sunscreen or bug spray as it contaminates the water. You walk for about 3mins and you have to wade across a river, up to neck. You will wade the same river again 2 more times but not as deep. The walk from carpark to cave entrance is about 30mins walk. You'll spend 3ish hours in the cave. Inside the cave you will be climbing/swimming/scrabbling etc. If confined spaces or heights aren't your thing or if you are not fit and healthy then you may have an issue. You might feel cold in the cave but nothing too bad. Lifejackets are provided from the carpark if you think you'll need one ask then. And that's it. Philip shared pictures of the cave that had been taken years ago so we'd have some photos. Again absolutely no cameras are allowed. Afterwards, same walk back to carpark and some light lunch was had after change into fresh clothes. Bring a full change and towel. There are showers (bring soap) and WC's at carpark.
In short I fully recommend Philip. A note, we passed some people with a guide and the delivery of the information etc seemed significantly less professional.

I originally had no interest in partaking in this tour and wasn’t really attracted to the idea of a cave tour. However, my friends who I am travelling with were keen and persuaded me to give it a go. The tour exceeded all expectations and was one of the best things I’ve done whilst travelling. Exploring the caves was so exciting and adventurous, sliding down rocks, climbing up them and swimming through the caves. The caves and rock formations were beautiful and unlike anything I’ve seen before. But the best part was Phillip, the most incredible tour guide. The tour was fascinating and better and more informative than any of the Mayan ruin tours I’ve been on. He was so passionate and so knowledgable regarding the archeology and history of the caves and the Mayans, giving us the most interesting captivating tour I’ve been on. The whole tour may seem expensive but I can’t recommend it enough, it is definitely worth the money and I guarantee will exceed all expectations.

We had 2 day trips with Yute Expeditions:: Day 1 to Xunantinich/Barton Creek Caves and Day 2 to Caracol with a stop on the way back at Rio On Pools for a swim. Our guide for both days was Elias, who was extremely knowledgeable on everything from Mayan history and archeology to plants, birds, and local culture. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and was never in a hurry. Everything was perfect from beginning to end, including a picnic lunch at Caracol and a delicious stop at Captain Jacks restaurant the first day for lunch (best quesadilla ever, and check out their hydroponic system for raising salad greens) I highly recommend our guide Elias and Yute Expeditions!

Philip was absolutely exceptional! Firstly, Caving isn’t the safest activity but he gave excellent instruction to ensure our group safety all the time. Then his passion and knowledge for the history of the cave and what it was used for was explained with great, fun, interest and depth. You can see he enjoys what he does which shines with his knowledge and care he gives.
Fantastic!!! Thank you Philip

The ATM cave tour was an absolutely amazing experience which we would highly recommend to others. Our guides knowledge about the area and Maya culture was so in depth. Expect to hike about 45 minutes on a flat track through the jungle and 3 river crossings to get to the cave entry. Then wade, swim and clamber for 2.5 hours inside the cave learning about ancient culture and traditions. Felt very safe and the small group size was awesome.

We highly recommend taking the ATM tour with Phillip, especially if you’re interested in understanding the history and geology of the cave. He really knows his stuff and explains it so well! The hike inside the cave is definitely challenging, and more than half the time you are in water (often waist or chest deep). But anyone who is reasonably fit, and willing to hike in a river, can do it. It’s truly unique. All of the different guides do a variation on the same thing, because they all are trained together and comply with the same rules/guidelines. We appreciated that Phillip starts early to be first or second in the cave, and has such a depth of knowledge.

We did the ATM tour from Yellow Belly Backpackers in San Ignacio with Philip. We've been travelling for two months now and it's been absolutely one of our highlights! He was so informative about everything from the cave geology to the remains and the local area, while also being hilarious and entertaining. If you want an all-round tour with delicious food at the end, this is the one you should go on!

This tour was amazing! Our guide Philip was not only very helpful during the climbing portions of the caving but also incredibly knowledgeable about everything we encountered. He really brought to life the way the Mayans lived and painted a picture in our minds of how these rituals were conducted. We were one of the first groups of the day to enter making it feel like we had the cave to ourselves, something that I think really makes his tour stand out. Cannot recommend Philip and the whole experience enough!

The tour was one of the best experiments on my trip! To climb through a cave in the dark and with water sometimes up to your neck is just awesome. Our Guide Philipp did a great job entertaining us and tell us about the Mayas and their rituals. He also made sure we all came back safely!
If you want to do an unique tour you are in the right place. Thanks again

Shamen has to be the very best driver/tour guide I have used in all my years of travel. On time, dependable, rolls with changes, exceptional knowledge of the area, etc. he excels at all the basics. And then there is the person, Shamen. He went out of his way to help us out when things went a little off the rails. Recommended restaurants for a member if our party with some food issues. Helped us change hotels when our resort had no hot water. Whatever we needed. He also researched at night to find experiences or shoos that were just what we needed. We spent hours in the van with him traveling across Belize, and our conversations were fun and interesting.
Don’t miss it. He’s a real treasure and I personally will be sure to use him every time I can. Thank you Shamen!
