I would recommend the tour for beginners and not so experienced riders. The scenery (when you are not doing the tour to the ruins) at first is not so amazing but later on, riding along the river and in the jungle is fantastic. As an experienced rider I wouldn't recommend the tour because they won't go fast (almost no trot, no canter at all). Nice touch is the lunch at the end of the tour. Thanks!

Eddie took us on a horse back ride to Xunantunich - he was great to talk to! Very funny and personable. He was very helpful with the horses (even though I am quite the beginner) and really made us feel welcome in Belize. Scenery was beautiful. Jose was our tour guide at the site and I am continually impressed how knowledgeable and passionate the guides are about Mayan history. We ended up being the only group on the tour and he took his time explaining all he sites and took excellent picture for us. Food (chicken, rice, beens, and veggies) awaited us after we took the horse ride back. Highly recommend.

We are not experienced riders and expected another ordinary trail ride. The horses were gentle and our guide was just super. A long portion of the ride is on a lovely shaded path along a river, although as you approach the ferry there is a very short portion along a road, which we didn't consider to be a problem. The hand cranked ferry was quite interesting. After a while we felt like we were on a real horse ride. Xunantunich was fascinating and the family of howler monkeys was an added treat. It was a lovely afternoon. Our ride was about an hour each way plus time at the ruins, and we returned to the stable, tired, sore and happy. It was a lovely afternoon.

The best tour you can imagine on horseback. My friend had never been on a horse before and I was worried about her. The guys made her feel secure, the horses were well trained, she had the time of her life. Eddie and Alton were amazing guys and their humor and laughter were infectious. We had our own tour guide, Omar who rode twith us. Lunch was wonderful and the ruins were amazing. We got to see the Guatemalan border from the top of Xunantunich. Such an excellent experience!

I had a private tour with Santiago; we rode to Xunantunich. As an experienced rider, the riding was no challenge but I still had a superb day out - he's got British ancestry, and lived in the UK, so there's certainly no language barriers and we discussed everything from nature to politics. Plus Xunantunich was stunning, of course. A fantastically memorable day out!

Every detail of this adventure was beyond perfect! Although the weather was nothing but rain at first, we showed up with horses and staff waiting on us still. Our guide William had so much incredible information on everything we encountered! From the tree's, plants, bugs, birds, animals, and ruins, we were learning something every step of the ride. I had even tried to do my own research on the ruins prior and learned basically nothing compared to what Willam had to teach us! To add to the magic, the property itself is gorgeous and our delicious lunch was grown, prepared, and served right on the property. Just magical from beginning to end! Can't recommend enough!

The horseback ride was great, and the handlers were great with our small kids (3&5). However, I booked the car service to and from Belize City, and our car on the way back to Belize City was in poor condition and made us very uncomfortable about the 2 hour drive back. If you're going to horseback ride, I would suggest booking your own travel instead of going through Hanna Stables.

Getting there is not difficult once you figure out how to stay on Western Highway as you traverse through some of the one-way streets of San Ignacio. There is a sign on the right-side of the highway to turn into the property (first entrance when you see the sign) and you simply travel down that bumpy road until it dead-ends into the stables.

Santiago is very accommodating on times but I highly recommend letting him know you're coming and coordinating with him - especially if you are interested in riding to the ruins. Jimmy was the head wrangler out there and took my wife and I on a nice little private ride around the property - they have about 550 acres and it took about 2 hours for where we went. He was very engaged in conversation, providing information as well as answering questions we had about what we were seeing. No experience is necessary and the horses are very well behaved. He took us a bit off the beaten path to show us some howler monkeys and their 2-day old babies sleeping in some overhanging trees. They were literally 15 feet over our heads and made for a NatGeo moment.

If you don't ride often, I highly recommend this experience. It's not like you'll be getting an adrenaline rush as you go as the horses are simply walking, but you leave with a big smile on your face and memories of doing something different along with something I'll just describe as a sense of peacefulness.

My wife even considers it the highlight of our trip.

It's easy enough to get to Xunantunich on public transportation, but this is totally worth the money. Jimmy is a great guide, fun and knowledgeable of both history and nature of the area. Horses are also a great way to see some of the nature reserve near San Ignacio. If you have a little time and money, this is a special way to spend part of a day.

I am so glad I decided to treat myself to the advanced ride to Xunantunich.
I've been riding for 25 years and owned/trained horses myself so I was looking for something a bit more exciting and advanced than the usual rides where you just plod along with horses falling asleep.
When I arrived at the stables I could see already how well looked after the horses were and how professional everything looked. I was given a beautiful Appalloosa called Crystal, she was awesome!
William the guide was outstanding. Friendly, knowledgeable, fun. He was helpful and genuinely had an awesome time with him!
Excelllent value for money, would definitely do it again if in the area
