About K’atun Ajaw – Belize Culture Tours
Elias Cambranes spent twenty years touring Maya National Parks and Caves in Belize in Guatemala. Working for all the big names in the business and big resorts, he decided to start working for himself twenty years ago. Following the footprints of the Mayan Culture allowed for the name KATUN AJAW “Lord of 20 years”. I have selected the best guides to carry out the tours when I need to stay back. Safety and security is number 1 priority on our tours followed by excellent information and very reliable vehicles. Since the start of KATUN AJAW, in 2007 we have a perfect clean record in safety and reliability…join us in the experience.

When we were waiting for Elias to pick us up to go to Tikal, I cringed while I watched another tour company load into a large bus. However, I was very delighted when Elias picked us up in a van that was extremely clean! While driving to Tikal, Elias did not miss a beat and educated us on the local Belizian and Mayan culture. Crossing the boarder into Guatamala was a breeze! He had all of the fees taken care of, and we were through in a matter of minutes. The next day, Elias took us to the ATM Cave. He knew that we are more adventurous, and did an amazing job of taking us through parts of the cave that were not the commonly traveled routes. He had a great amount of respect for the Mayan culture and is clearly passionate about educating himself about the culture. When we completed the cave tour, his wife also prepared an EXCELLENT meal for us. It may have been my favorite meal of the trip. I love that we traveled in small groups and that our experience was adjusted to give us the best experience possible. Going on the tours with Elias was definitely the highlight of our trip to Beliez.

Ben was our tour guide but he was so much more than that. His wealth of knowledge on rock formations and everything at ATM was outstanding. He picked us up very early and we were the first and only group there which made the experience even better. I can't swim and he made me feel very comfortable and safe. I am so glad I chose Katun and had Ben to show me ATM. Elias definitely knows everything there is to know about Mayan ruins. We had a couple in our group who were more familiar with mayan ruins so they asked lots of questions before we got to Tikal which was a very good set up for everyone else because it gave us a lot of background info before the official tour started. There was no question Elias did not have the answer to.  He was fun, organized and really the best person to show you Tikal. He made the border crossing very seamless and because he has dual citizenship he was able to start and end with us.  Lunch was ready with no wait time once we were done with the tour.

We (30yo couple) loved the ATM tour with Ben Cruise (our guide) and could not recommend it enough. What makes the difference is that Elias (owner) and the guide actually wanted us to have the best experience. This means; we were the 2nd group in the cave so the silence was beautiful, the darkness when you switched off your head lamp was insane and the water and air were clear (you will see the difference on the way out). Also the group sizes are smaller - only 4 for our tour and on the way out we saw companies that had 2 vans full of people (this is important not only for a personalised experience, less waiting around for people to climb ladders etc but also because there are only 3 showers for each gender at the exit). We learned a lot about the Mayans, the geology of the cave, the surrounding flora, history of the area and about Ben. It was a great day, lunch was delicious and we had many laughs! I could think of nothing to make the day better.

Elias was booked as our guide for a trip to Tikal from San Ignacio through the resort we were staying at and I cannot say enough good things about this experience. Elias made the border crossing easy, the vehicles used for transportation were in excellent condition. As a guide, he is a wealth of information, providing a ton of detail and able to speak on every topic we asked questions about. He was incredibly professional and has the vibe of a professor in terms of the content he provides during the tour. He went out of his way to make sure that everything was taken care of and even had great recommendations for us on where we should eat and drink in San Ignacio. The tours are affordable and exactly as described. I would absolutely book Elias for any tour in Belize!

We went on two tours whilst staying in San Ignacio with our teenage kids. We went to ATM cave with Elias. This is an amazing day out (reviewed separately). Elias picked us up on time from our accommodation. It was just us 4 on the tour (it’s the off-season). Elias has passion and this comes across. He pointed out plants/trees and wildlife. He had lots to share about the Maya and we learned a lot too. Home cooked lunch eaten in return from the cave, at the car park, was delicious. We were in great hands and loved every minute. For our second tour, Tikal, Elias was unavailable. This was a shame as it was the key reason we booked (other reviews rated his tours of Tikal most highly). But not his fault that Tikal was closed the previous day due to local protests. So we switched our days for our two tours. Elias has dual nationality so can take the tour all the way to Tikal. When he is not available he uses Mike from San Ignacio to the border (Mike sees you safely through the border - all fees included in the tour price) and then another guide within Guatemala. We had Reggie, a free lance guide who uses a driver (you change vans at the border). Reggie was very good. He has studied the Maya for 8 years and is interested in the history and is keen to share. He made an effort to ensure our kids saw monkeys and other wildlife. He showed us the key areas of Tikal and maybe the ones off the main paths - we took some lovely jungle paths that we wouldn’t have known to use. Unfortunately there was a huge rainstorm which, combined with a starving child (!), ended our tour a little earlier than my husband wanted. He would have liked to go down every single path and wasn’t sure that he’d seen everything there was to see. Instead, we walked back to a lunch spot at the edge of the park and headed home. In hindsight, we should have taken a snack for the starving child, waited out the storm, and made sure we went to the second climbable pyramid (which he felt we mussed out on - he likes to take photos from every angle). We should also have taken our raincoats. Rookie error given that we had them in San Ignacio. If we come back we would use Elias’s company again. Very professional. Incredibly knowledgeable and interested. Highly recommend.
