Luis Zaiden took 4 of us on the ATM Cave tour. He did a fantastic job taking his time to explain all the details of the cave structure and formations as well as the Mayan history. Other guides rushed their guests though the cave. Louis showed us every handhold and way to twist and turn to get through the difficult passages, putting safety first each time. Look no further...hire Luis. He also arranged a tour of Tikal for us with an expert guide at the site. He was very flexible changing the date of our tour at the last minute to accommodate the weather. And amazingly, he even came with his wife to check on us at our rental home when we were late returning from a very long trip we took on our own to Caracol to make sure we got back safely. I can't say enough good things about Luis and Kawiil Tours.

Luis is an excellent guide! He takes his time at ATM explaining in detail everything you see along the way. During the trip we saw other guides rush the cave doing two trips in the time we did one. Other companies literally take you in and out again with no explanation into the history and use of the cave.

This guy is so passionate about what he does and the price is less than most other tour companies. Highly highly recommended!

Luis is a fantastic guide and made our ATM tour one of the highlights of our trip to Belize. Why do I recommend Luis -

Luis has a deep knowledge of both the regional archeological evidence and Mayan spoken history. Throughout the tour, he combined both to layer fascinating stories of how the Mayan people used the cave with historical evidence from the time period.

Luis got us to the cave early and invested time at each point of interest. He would describe what we were seeing, apply the historical context and engage our questions throughout the tour. Even though we had the benefit of starting in a quite/dark cave, by the end of the tour multiple groups has hurriedly passed us by.

If you are into potoo - Luis pointed out two on our hike to the cave.

Luis clearly loves his job and my family enjoyed his sense of humor. If you are doing the ATM tour, going with Luis would be our recommendation.

We did the ATM cave tour in Belize with Luis last week and it was the highlight of our trip. I highly recommend doing this with Luis as he's a great tour guide, knows so much more about the cave and it's history than other guides and has a great sense of humor that makes the whole experience even more incredible!

It is the experience of a lifetime and shouldn't be missed. We felt completely safe on the tour and with the equipment provided. Blanca, Luis' wife, kept all our personal belongings safe and made a fresh delicious lunch for our group after the tour. We definitely worked an appetite!

Thank you Luis and Blanca!!

We scheduled our cave tubing through Luis and had John as our tour guide. We were staying at the Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge and John picked us up at the resort. It was an excellent experience. I specifically asked if we could do more than the “standard” cruise ship type tubing and they delivered!! You carry your tubes balanced on your head so your hands are free. I had trouble getting the big blue tube to balance properly, so John gave me his tube to carry and he carried mine. He uses the black tube so he can paddle better to pull us through the caves. The hike to the put in place is not strenuous - more of a nature walk. It was no problem carrying the tubes. John took us into an extra cave at the beginning that we were in by ourselves. We saw tons of bats in this cave which was a fun experience. We were in Belize during a heatwave/drought and it was so refreshing to be in the cooler caves for the day. The water was clear and a beautiful shade of blue. I was not cold at all in the cave. We floated through a second cave section where we saw some kayakers. We then joined the more “standard” tour cave section where most of the people were entering the water. However, John did his best to keep us away from the masses of people. We got out of our tubes part way through and walked to different parts of the cave to see more formations. Throughout John gave us lots of information about the Maya and cave formations. We walked to an overlook where we looked down on the big groups of cave tubers which was fun. At the end, we got to float on the river longer through the lush greenery while other groups got out and walked part of the way. I highly recommend doing the extra sections of the cave - it gives you more time to enjoy the experience. John truly enjoys doing his tours and there is not a rushed feeling you might get with some larger companies. Doing the private tour with Luis's company is the way to go. The facility start/finish had plenty of clean bathrooms and lots of souvenir stands. We finished with a lunch of rice/beans/chicken/coleslaw which was really good. You could get a beer of soda with your lunch. The lunch was included in the tour price.

The ATM Cave Tour with Luis was spectacular.

Not only does Luis have a comprehensive background in botany and archeology, but he also has the ability to effectively communicate the intricate history of the ATM Cave with his groups in a relatable way. His narration reflects his intimate knowledge of the cave and his heritage - revealing perhaps one of the reasons for the passion he brings to his small group tours.

Our tour of four was small and intimate, allowing Luis to be attentive to all participants and their needs, whether that be support on a climb or answering our many questions. The tour was well-paced; while other groups sped through, we were able to enjoy the experience, spending at least three hours in the cave itself. Because of Luis' pacing, we often had entire chambers to ourselves. The length allowed Luis to intersperse details throughout the whole tour and not provide information overload all at once. The pacing also allowed for the tour to be less strenuous than reported online. There IS hiking (on a mostly flat path less three river crossings), swimming (upon entry but at other points as well), and climbing (in a few spots but with many hand and foot holds), but none are extreme or too difficult to manage. Luis makes the return back through the cave a different experience than the way there, keeping the tour interesting and dynamic in unexpected ways. The lunch we ate afterwards was quite delicious (and accommodating of dietary restrictions.)

And best of all, Luis is hilarious, personable, and a delight. The experience is truly one of a kind and formidable - book immediately.

Incredible experience! So very happy we chose KaWiil. We really wanted to do the cave tubing, but I was nervous since we booked so late. To my surprise, KaWiil Tours actually called me back to say that John was available to be our guide. John was on time bright and early the next morning, he even found us wandering around outside our hotel before he swept us off to the Nohoch Che'en cave. As an experienced cave explorer, super friendly dude, a natural resource management professional, and native Belizean (naturally!) we were so impressed with the way he showed us the lizards, plants, trees, birds, insects, fish and flowering plants along the trail. He took us through the caves; it was like we had the place all to ourselves! John introduced us to the bats, the swallows, kingfishers, ancient Mayan traditions, cave formations and river flow... so awesome. I was blown away. Afterwards, he bought us lunch at a cool tiki bar and filled us in on Belize history; so super. We had the BEST time. Thank you, John! You really made our visit to San Ignacio special!

The highlight of my entire time in Belize was the ATM tour with Luis. There are many tour operators, but if you go with Kawaii tours, you will not be disappointed. This tour is now one of my lifetime best adventures. I was concerned about my ability, but Luis was so good at guiding, encouraging, helpful and knowledgeable that I felt comfortable. He loves what he is doing, he only takes a few people at a time, and he is funny. Don't miss taking this incredible adventure with Luis of Kawiil Tours!!!!

My partner and I spent four days in Belize over the holidays. We used Kawiil tours for everything! They shuttled us from the Belize City airport to San Ignacio, provided our tours for the Caracol ruins one day, the ATM Cave tour another day then shuttled us to the Guatemalan border. They even coordinated our pickup on the other side of the border that took us to Tikal. I sent Luis, the owner, an email with a breakdown of each place we needed to get picked up or dropped off and when we wanted to take the tours and he handled every detail with no issues and accommodated our schedules. Each driver/tour guide that we worked with was exceptionally hospitable and knowledgeable about the history, flora and fauna of each place we visited and more than once went out of their way to make our experiences extra special. Luis and the entire team at Kawiil Tours could teach the world a thing or two about customer service! We love these guys and we could not recommend them more confidently to anyone looking for good people to be a part of their adventures to Belize.

Luis was amazing!! If we could give him more than five stars, we would! We couldn’t ask for a better guide. He was super knowledgeable, patient, and personable. He constantly reads and expands his knowledge on the Mayan history so he is able to educate his groups more in depth and in new perspectives.

He is one of two guides who has been doing these tours the longest so you feel safe with him the entire time. He offers smaller group tours and private tours so my husband and I were able to navigate the cave with ease and even see things that other groups didn’t see because of the size. The ATM cave is a must see, and we would recommend doing it with Luis!
