Green Hills Butterfly Ranch is the place to go to enjoy Belize butterflies...

Green Hills Butterfly Ranch is the place to go to enjoy Belize butterflies and learn about them in the process. Green Hills literally has thousands of live butterflies on display in a 4,000 square feet walk-in flight area. The guided tour in the butterfly flight area and the Blue Morpho Breeding Center takes about an hour. The facilities are surrounded by a botanical garden with more than 150 labeled plants, shrubs and trees. These gardens are home to dozens of hummingbirds, and the average visitor can easily see eight or even more species while visiting the Butterfly Ranch. Green Hills is worth a stop on your way to or from other popular destinations such as the Mountain Pine Ridge, Barton Creek, Caracol or the nearby villages of San Antonio and El Progresso. We open at 7 am and close at 4 pm. Late tours are welcome but only after reservation.

If you like butterflies and hummingbirds, then you’ve got to visit the Butterfly Ranch. The whole enclosure is maybe 4000 sqft, but there are hundreds or thousands of butterflies. They are literally EVERYWHERE. They’ll land on you or just pass by. It’s really fantastic and exotic. If it’s raining, the butterflies are smart and they go for cover just like... More

I have visited here many times and it is a great place for butterfly photos. You can NOT wear insect repellant in this area. It is definitely worth a stop.

The Butterfly Ranch is a wonderful place to spend time and relax. There are around 15 varieties of butterfly in the butterfly enclosure and the owner, Jan, is extremely knowledgeable and dedicated to his work. They go through five pounds of sugar everyday ensuring that the butterflies and hummingbirds are well nourished. It is estimated that they have upwards of... More

I think I've gone to a butterfly house before but it must not have been a very good one because this one blew me away. You walk into the butterfly house and there's TONS of them flying around, you actually have to watch where you step because there's so many. You get to get up close to a bunch of... More

We were told by our resort that the Butterfly Ranch was open to stop in guests until the last tour at 3:30. After walking in very high temperatures thinking that we would get a rest at the ranch and have a chance to buy water, we were rudely turned away by the woman who is one of the owners of... More

I was driven the long drive from my hotel...$50, then had to pay $40, $20 USA for half an hour with the butterflies. So for what could have been a half hour trip the cost was $70 USA. But, the hummingbirds were great and I was able to spend time taking photos of them. I just can believe I had... More

We stopped by for a tour on our way to Pine Ridge and the nearby Mayan archaeological ruins. We were assigned a guide and she took us into the butterfly enclosure for our 30min tour. She was a delightful woman and very knowledgeable. There was one other couple in the enclosure with their guide. We were advised when we had... More

Eight miles into a bumpy ride, one wondered how the owners ever thought of creating a butterfly ranch away from most everything. The ranch isn't fancy; it has a sustainable quality to it. We sat among the fluttering indigenous butterflies trying to catch snapshots of their beauty. The glasswing butterflies are small, see-through and lovely. The knowledgeable guide showed us... More

One of the nicest I have been to. Knowledgeable staff and a treat to see these from cocoon to adult. A BIG bonus was the hummingbird population and ease of photos--I would have stopped just for them!

Accompanied by a local guide we spent a couple hours looking at the butterflies, hummingbirds, and on the adjacent trails. Our escort to the butterfly enclosure, Celia, was poised and knowledgeable. She gave us a most enlightening tour pointing out the life cycle of many of the butterfly species and how she and other staff care for them. It was... More
