Unique experience. It reminds the Pirates of the Caribbeans ride in Disney Land. Must use a tour. Make sure you pick a tour that: [1] Carries your tube for you. [2] Does the two tunnels. Everything is negotiable. The competition their is fierce. If you are coming by boat book directly for a fraction of the price.
The only disappointing part was the it's more of a lake than a river. The flow is really slow in the caves. The guides did most of the work to pull us.
If you are debating of going to this or the ATM cave, go for the ATM cave. It's much more adventurous assuming you can physically do it.

Loved floating down the river and sharing this experience with my teenage kids. I appreciated hearing about all the historical events for our tour guide. Was not on a cruise ship and had no problem booking it for the four us us. Look forward to doing it again someday. Thank you for such a wonderful and memorable experience.

Great experience with knowledgeable guide.
The only downside was our ages, early 80s so te 30 min hike through the rain forest was tiring. Our patient guide took it slowly with some rest stops. The tubing itself and then floating out on the river was wonderful.
Having natural history explained was interesting.

Cave tubing experience was GREAT ! The guys who took us were not just tour guides, they were tour junkies- knowing exactly what info we would want and HOW wed want it. They knew so much about everything around the area and made us so excited to see the insides of the caves- it was explained as if it were a whole other world and took us through THAT experience. Id DEFIANTLY recommend it!

Firstly the tubing through the cave system was great. Informative guide led us on a trek through
Jungle and river before we got to the mouth of the cave system where the more adventurous of us has a dip in the cold river waters before clambering onto our tubes to float through the caverns and tunnels observing bats, stalagmites, stalactites and stunning rock formations.
The downsides to this trip are the bus journey of and hour and a quarter ( which was not mentioned when booking) and then hanging about for an hour after the tubing had finished with no organisation as to what was happening.
There is a bar and food shack available at extra cost and a gift shop for souvenirs, rum etc.
A different cruise line was there at the same time as us and had a buffet included, something TUI might want to consider in the future given the amount of time we were at the sight.
The negatives are mainly the cruise lines problems and not the cave tubing centres
So if you have the opportunity to visit give it a go we were glad we went.

On our recent cruise on Royal Caribbean to Belize, we walked out the cruise terminal and into the shopping area where there were many shops and excursion booths. We inquired about the cave tubing from a few vendors, and settled with Belize Carriage Tours. They offered a bus ride to the site, with a guide and all necessary equipment, but no lunch, for $45US. The cruise offered the same tour for $86US. After we signed up and paid, we waited around for 10-15min when they gathered up all the people, 12 in total, and we walked out of the building to a bus waiting outside. We left at 10:45am, and we were very concerned that we had to return by 4:30pm to the ship. Kingsley was our tour guide. He kept the bus entertained during the 1 hour bus ride to Nohoch Che'en. There were 8 college students from the University of Alabama for Spring Break, 1 couple from Tampa who spoke Spanish, and us, 2 Canadians in late 50s. Kingsley was funny, energetic and entertaining. The bus went through the city and Kingsley explained a lot of the places and culture to us.
Once there, we quickly got geared up with a helmet w headlamp, life jacket, and a tube. We can rent crocs for walking in the water for $3US, which just about everyone did. The shoes were clean and looked new, and they have all the sizes. Then we walked for about 20min through a path in the forest to the head of the loading spot. It was a pretty walk with nice flora and fauna, and our guides explained a lot of the diff vegetations to us. There were no bugs at all that day. Also another guide Syad joined us and he helped me carry my tube all the way. The walk was not strenuous but did involve couple of shallow water crossing with the tube.
Once there, the tubes were tied 6 together, and each guide took care of a 6-tube fleet. The water was cool but not cold, since the day was not very hot. It was very comfortable, and the pace of flow was very slow, with the guide pulling most of the way as the water current was very slow. So we got to observe all the cave formation, and our guide Syad did explain a lot of the details to us. We were inside the cave for at least 30 min, There was a sink hole along the ways, so we saw daylight coming through and it was quite magical. It didn't feel eerie or weird since there were many tubers, but it didn't feel crowded either. After the cave, the cruise excursion would end and the people taken back to the bus. But for our tour, we unhooked the tubes, and everyone free flowed down the river (well, paddled by hand). We saw the mangroves by the shore but didn't see any monkeys. Then we got back to where we started, and we took the tube back the same 20 min hike back to the bus. Syad helped me carry my tube again.
We felt safe enough to leave our belongings inside the bus while we went tubing, as did everyone. The bus driver stayed with the bus and mostly it was just our cell phones and clothes. We came back and found everything as we left it. The only regret was that we didn't bring a waterproof camera, or a waterproof case so that we can bring a camera or cell phone for taking pictures.
The bus ride back was 1 hour of rest and no more chattiness. We went to Wet Lizard at the port for a nice cool beer afterwards.
It was an amazing experience. We enjoyed it very much, and at no time did we feel that it was unsafe or we were ripped off. Definitely a fun experience worth going for.

Wonderful tour guide (Jeff) who was informative and obviously beloved by his community (everywhere we stopped, folks were happy to see him.) We did not have to carry our tubes (strongman Jeff had them!), we were the FIRST into the caves so it was totally private, and we were the LAST to go to Altun-Ha, which means there were no crowds at all!!! Also, there were puppies and pretty cranes at the ruin, which is totally random, but we got some great pictures. One of the best excursions we have ever taken. Thank you, Jeff!
Tamale lunch was delicious! This is definitely for people who are in okay shape and know how to hustle (not for people who want to browse and shop all day.) The faster you move, the move you see.
Hot tip: If you want to buy something, ask Jeff to tell you what a fair price is instead of negotiating. I paid a little extra for Cashew Wine because I didn't think to ask him. It's really good though - bring some home, Belize is the only place you can get it, and they sell it at Altun-Ha.

My family and I met Skinny at the turn heading to the caves where all the independent tour guides wait. He was fantastic, waived us down and offered a fair price. No rush on the tour at all, really took his time explaining the history of the caves. Well prepared guide, friendly....highly recommend!

It's well worth the trip to take this adventure. Each person gets his/her own tube, and they are bound together for your group. Guides are mandatory to help preserve the eco system. There are countless booking companies for this same trip, and prices vary, so do a bit of shopping before buying your tickets. We purchased through Inland & Sea Adventures and had Tariq as our guide. He was fabulous. I also think there are a couple of options for just the cave, or cave and river, and maybe an optional Crystal Cavern. Some of the packages include zip-lining nearby and of course that impacts the price. Although we loved Tariq, we felt misled by the booking company and I wouldn't recommend them. Beware there is quite a long walk on uneven terrain involved, if your'e traveling with someone with mobility issues. Don't worry about your cell phone ... it won't get wet (but you need something to carry it in as you'll need both hands free at times.) We sure loved the cave tubing!
