He took his time to respond but there was also nearly any chance of wind that week. Luckily I had one windy day and MJ and Mitch took me and two students to a beautiful sandbar with waist deep water. Perfect location to learn and take your skills to the next level. MJ gave me great tips and shared his experiences. I never launched a kite on the boat before. Kiteboarding depends on wind and it isn't easy to get good conditions especially for beginners. I had a fantastic kiting day in San Pedro, thank you so much guys!! Hope to kite with you somewhere sometime again. Cash only!

MJ and Mitchell took my two sons (14 and 12) and I out Christmas Eve Day for our first lesson. We did not know what to expect. We knew how to wakeboard and wakesurf, but had no kiting or wind-sport related experience. They took the time to educate us on the gear, how to set up, and how to operate it safely. It is one thing to fly a kite and an entirely different thing to control the kite in order harness the wind's power to pull you. Surprisingly, it does not take a ton of wind to pull me (200 lbs) out of the water with ease - only about 14 mph. There are so many days where we live (Montana USA) that the wind blows making normal smooth-water lake activities not attractive. Now, the wind becomes a friend instead of an inconvenience. We look forward to continuing to learn more about kite surfing (and maybe kite snowboarding, skating, and other developing kite sports) with a couple more lessons - hopefully again with MJ! My sons loved the whole thing...and there is a cool bit of science education that they learned in the process - weather, aerodynamics, etc. Plus, standing a in two feet of water on a giant sand bar two miles off shore was a first for us. Highly recommend!

I booked a last minute trip to Belize to learn how to kiteboard. Before I booked the trip I emailed Passionkite (MJLeslie50@yahoo.com) to check on availability. I heard back from MJ quickly that they were available and I signed up for four days of kiteboarding lessons and then booked my flight to Belize. I got so lucky - had the perfect weather, great winds, and the BEST instructor. MJ picked me up from my hotel, or The Baker, in his golf cart for lessons each day and would also drop me off each time. Then we went to his boat and went out to the most beautiful sandbar. The water color is so unreal. The sandbar is crystal clear water and is about 4 feet deep (no dry land). I was researching multiple places to learn the sport but it became obvious this spot was the best due to the unbeatable water color and being able to learn in the water as opposed to land. I had never taken kiteboarding lessons or tried to kiteboard before this trip. The first lesson was learning kite safety, kite set up and how to fly just the kite. Flying the kite was wayyy harder than I anticipated. You have to learn how to control the kite before you can even think about adding a board. MJ was very patient teaching me and helped keep me tethered so I didn’t take off unexpectedly. By the second lesson I was feeling more confident thanks to MJ’s instructions and had much better control of the kite. We practiced everything I learned from lesson 1 and added in new skills such as dragging and even testing out the board while dragging since I had learned everything to date. The third lesson focused on actually flying the kite and using the board. I was actually able to kiteboard and got a couple of decent beginner rides in! I came a long way from my first lesson when I could barely control the kite to being able to confidently control the kite, put on a board, and then be able to ride. All credit goes to MJ! All the lessons were great, but the fourth lesson was so much fun! I had a few long rides and learned how to better operate the kiteboard. I want to take more lessons and brush up on my wakeboarding skills, which MJ can teach you too. I must also mention that MJ prioritizes safety. I felt comfortable in his boat and out on the water with him. He always brought someone else (at least one other person) out with us to help with the boat and for safety reasons. Lastly, MJ and his girlfriend Tina are extremely nice, helpful and fun to be around. They can give you recommendations on places to stay, eat, and tour. I highly recommend Passionkite and can’t wait to come back!! Other tips: I highly recommend sunglasses, wearing a long sleeve sun shirt and a buff. Hats are not recommended for kiteboarding because you need to be able to easily look up.

MJ did a great job of breaking down the process of flying the kite. Before this experience I had tried flying one other time which didn’t turn out the best. MJ made learning to fly the kite fun while still focusing on safety and the step by step process of flying and landing the kite. By the end of the day MJ had helped me to improve my kite control by 10 fold. Thank you again MJ! I won’t forget the experience!

We'd highly recommend kiting with MJ if you are looking to learn or just get out for a fun day or afternoon of kiting. Huge sand bar, good wind, great instruction! Fun boat ride out to the spot, too. We always got a response the same day we would email MJ (he would respond at night because I'm sure he's busy all day) using this email: mjleslie50@yahoo.com He's a great guy!
