This is a Very Large Lake. One word " Amazing"
998 Nine Mile Point Road
Seville, FL 32190
Lake George Forest and Wildlife Management area is 7,800 acres acquired in 1990 by Volusia County Government and the St. Johns Water Management District. Volusia County used funds from the Environmentally Endangered Lands program that was approved by the County's voters in 1986. Previously, the land was owned by the Union Camp Paper company which used it for timber production.
This conservation area is part of a 35,380-acre wildlife management area that provides more than 20 miles of contiguous habitat for many species of Florida’s wildlife along Lake George and the St. Johns River.
Two marked trails lead to several of Florida’s natural communities including pine flatwoods, cypress swamps, and marsh. The blue trail passes Lake George, the second largest lake in Florida and the largest lake along the St. Johns River.

We access Lake George in Astor past the Blackwater Inn. Free boat ramp. Or you can rent a boat at the Full Moon Campground (You;ll see sign off 40 east side of bridge.) Do not go there without going thru the Blue creek run. When you come out of there, turn left and go thru the :cattle gates" into Lake George. From there go slightly to the right (follow all the other boats) and go to Silver Glen Springs. This is a must do...All the boats party there. The springs are cold 72 degrees year round and crystal clear. You won't regret it. They don't allow alcohol there anymore, but you know how that goes...

Great fishing & boating. You can swim in the springs, on the lake, at Silver Glen Run, Juniper Spring and Salt Springs. Very natural and balanced ecosystem with minimal tourism. There is an abundance of wildlife, a few places to get a beer and friendly locals. I recommend a trip to Lake George for the tranquility, sunsets and natural romance of the lake at night.

This big very shallow lake can get quite rough on windy days. It's so long that it is hard to see the far shore but the strait line of day Mark's make for an easy if boring boring crossing - but essential to enjoying the River

This is a wonderful lake for fishing or just boating. Leads over to the Springs where the water is so clear and cold but lots of fun to anchor and swim. The only negative is that it can become very, very rough when the wind starts up.

Lake George is really just a wide area of the St. John's River. It is very shallow at the shoreline with a real flat bottom about 12' deep over most of the lake. Beware of storms as it can get really rough quick. It used to be a major barge route, but no more. A number of springs dump into the lake with Silver Glen being the best. Fishing is pretty good. The water is somewhat salty due to the spring flow.

After much effort, I have finally found public access to Lake George, aka Lake Welaka. Ninemile Point is a long pier on the eastern shores of the lake. It's part of Lake George Wildlife Management Area. Not the easiest to get to, especially on a motorcycle. You have to take 9 Mile Point Rd, a graded, dirt road from Pierson. Not a fun ride but beautiful. The lake is so large that you can barely see the other side. Lots of wildlife in the area. Not another person in sight. Great place to relax and take pictures. Definitely worth a visit.

The lake is large enough you need to keep an eye on the weather. Water averaged around 5-12 ft. but it is advisable to follow channel markers of you are unfamiliar with the lake. Thee are commercial fishermen using long nets so pay attention to other boater so as to not run over their nets.

Lake George was included in our scenic St. Johns Riverboat tour. We sailed out of Astor at the Blackwater Inn, This tour brings you down river through Blue Creek in the Ocala
National Forest. This creek is a unique habitat and in the warmer
months is a prime feeding area for the manatee. Alligator encounters are plentiful year around. When we left this creek behind to re-enter the St. Johns River by the pristine Lake George, Florida’s second largest lake which is surrounded by the Ocala National forest on the west and the Lake George State Forest on the east. After Lake George we returned on the St. Johns River to Astor. Fantastic trip; gorgeous day; will do it again.

Does anyone know where there is eel grass on the east side of the lake or south east corner?

You can find eel grass between The Pine Island boat ramp and Willow Point on the Central Eastern side of Lake George, near Runaway Bay Lodge.

When I was a young my Grandfather took me to Lake George on a fishing trip it was the coolest place I've ever been.
He carried us over on a boat to one of the Islands where there were navel orange trees with the biggest best oranges in ever had.
What Island is that ,does anyone know .
This was in the early and mid 70s

I am interested in purchasing a property in Astor, west of Astor Park directly in front of Lake George, about 1/4 mile west of the entrance to St. John's River. Someone told me that the shoreline is EXTREMELY shallow, and getting a boat up to a boathouse (old, yet present on the property) could be impossible. Are you famliar with this "issue"?
How is crabbing there and what do you usually use for bait?
There are blue crabs in the lake it has a high salt content from the springs. You also find other salt water species. It is a brackish water way. There is also a blue crab fishery on the lake so the prior response is very wrong.
