Booked a small sedan, but as we were going to be driving to Aspen, Vail and Snowmass but were assured we would need a more powerful vehicle. So we upgraded. We were very glad we did - this was a massive, awe inspiring and scary...More

This is a beautiful drive and you can go to the top and the views are magnificent. If you are older you might have a problem with altitude as the pass is very high and this seems to bother a lot of folks who are...More

We drove over Independence Pass on a Friday afternoon headed to Aspen. It was 50 degrees out when we turned onto Hwy 82, and by time we made it over the pass we hit all the environmental extremes. Sun, warmth, fog, and snow before returning...More

Beautiful place. It took us half day because we didn’t want to miss one great picture. If you come to Aspen I encourage you to do it.

Watch for bighorn sheep and be sure to wear a jacket. Even in the summer there is snow and the wind howls!

It was so cool once you got up there. I am a well seasoned driver living in northern Minnesota and even I was a little scared of the one lane roads and the tight corners. Mostly because of other reckless drivers but a beautiful area...More

This is the road trip of road trips in the Rockies. You might clutch the arm rest or cower down in the floorboard at some point, but once you look over the edge of the road, you'll never forget the sights.

Yes, you can drive from Leadville through Independence Pass. It's the route we took last year. As others have pointed out, the pass doesn't usually open until late May. But your trip in July should be fine.
