About
Built in 1880 and little changed since, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is the finest and most spectacular example of steam era mountain railroading in North America. Its equipment, structures and vast landscape exist today as if frozen in the first half of the 20th century. USA Today readers voted Cumbres & Toltec the Best Scenic Train Ride in America. Climb aboard this National Historic Landmark for a 64-mile day trip you’ll never forget. Our coal-fired steam engine carries you through steep mountain canyons, high desert, and lush meadows as you zig zag between the Colorado and New Mexico border. Open your eyes to spectacular and rare Western scenery which can only be viewed from this train’s unique route. Ride in the Victorian elegance of our deluxe parlor car or choose the budget-friendly coach car. Either way, a delicious buffet lunch is included. Trains depart daily from Chama, NM and Antonito, CO, from late May’s blooming wildflowers through the golden leaves of October.

- BrazilCaliforniaSao Paulo, SP132 contributionsExperience the Full Journey: A Complete Ride on the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad is a Must!Cumbers and Toltec Railroad: an unforgettable journey! The steam train ride from Antonito to Chama offered breathtaking views and excellent service. We marveled at the diverse trees and fauna along the way. The Alta Garden at the Chama depot was a lovely sight. Lunch was delicious and varied. Riding in the parlor car was a treat, with loose chairs that gave us the flexibility to change positions and enjoy the scenery from different angles. Our car attendant and the narrator in the open-air car shared excellent stories and were very amusing. Highly recommend this scenic adventure!Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 16, 2024
- Barb RKansas City, Missouri190 contributionsBreathtaking Adventure from Antonito Station to the Top of the Rocky MountainsAntonito Station is beautiful, what an amazing breathtaking western landscape where many movies have been filmed! The train trip was stunning the entire ride! Loved the Sublette ghost town and riding the ledge above the bottomless gorge, the Garfield Monument was spectacular, not to mention the cool tunnels! I have never seen anything like this!!! Up, up, and farther up to Osier Station where the meal was delicious. Wow what an adventure! Perfect time of year for the journey, not too hot or cold at all. Going again at least annually. No butt or leg pain, comfortable seats in coach with enough seating to move around and spread out. It never felt overcrowded. The volunteers announcing all the landmarks and features were wonderful and knowledgeable thank you! Very clean restrooms with plentiful paper towels, sanitizing soap, and TP. Margaritas and Bloody Mary's at the consession for $10. Went earlier to souvenir shop to buy stuff. If you need an extra travel bag for the trip they have cute Steam Engine bags and waxed canvas rugged backpacks. There are travel mugs, too. I bought the bronze little steam engine keychain. Maybe get the copper Cumbres Toltec coin and keyring next time I go. Going back! Also, Where a hat or soot crumbs will go in your hair FYI.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 23, 2024
- Dorothy SNebraska15 contributionsYou can't go wrong on this scenic train ride!It is so worth taking the Cumbres & Toltec train through the mountains of southern Colorado and into northern New Mexico. It was so beautiful and relaxing the views are stunning. Did see some deer, antelope, and an elk. Midway through we stopped for lunch, was shocked to see the buffets with a salad bar, the selection of different choices for the main course and desserts. You leave hungry it's your own fault!!! Back on the train after the noon meal traveled on to Chama NM. again, the views are wonderful. We spent time riding in the open car where one of the knowledgeable volunteers inform you of the area's history. A coach bus took us back to Antonito Co where our car was parked. I want to take this train again sometime in the fall when the leaves change color, I know it would be beautiful scenery. This train is a hidden gem!Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 30, 2024
- travellustinggirlKeller, Texas101 contributionsAwesome scenery. Food not so much.Scenery was epic. The employees made the trip fun. The car attendants kept all of us in drinks and told us ahead of time what we were about to see. The lunch was far less than advertised. I was expecting bbq. Our lunch was dried out, burned turkey meatloaf, stewed chicken, a couple of salads and stale desserts. Everything was super clean. Please heed the advice to wear closed toed shoes, a hat and sunglasses. We spent most of the trip on the gondola car, so these 3 items were necessary. We rode the bus from Antonito to Chama and then the train from Chama to Antonito. I recommend this trip as you get to see all of it.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 9, 2024

Highly recommend you take this excursion - especially in late Sept when the Aspens are a golden yellow. The views are amazing. We have done alot of train rides on the east coast and this was by far our favorite! We paid for the Parlor car and it was worth it. We travelled the entire line to Chama, NM. Lunch was good. Would have liked a little more time there but you have plenty of time to eat and use the restrooms etc. The steam engine trains are not actually using coal anymore due to the chance of wildfires - they use oil instead but it was still an awesome ride.

This is a wonderful train ride, but the side you sit on does matter when it comes to views. If traveling from Chama to Antonito, you want to sit on the right side. If traveling from Antonito to Chama, you want to be on the left side. I say this because a fair portion of the trip cuts along mountain sides and if you’re not on the “correct side” you’ll be looking at the mountain side. If you’re on the “wrong side” you can turn your chair around so you can face across the passenger car to look out, but it’s not the same as being on the side with the good view. My wife and I traveled in the Parlor Car which was great, but it is quite pricey. One note on this, if you do travel on the Parlor Car, there are 20 seats. You do not want to sit in seats 1 & 2, and 19 & 20, especially 1 & 20. These seats put you right next to the back door and people will be constantly opening the rear door to go out and stand on the rear platform, and they will be banging into you with the door pretty much each time they go out. We sat in seats 3 & 4 while traveling from Antonito to Chama and it was great. Basically, try to avoid any seats right next to a door no matter what car you ride on. One final note, while this is a very nice and scenic train ride, especially in the fall with all the colors, if you have to choose between this train ride and the Durango Silverton train ride, I’d go with the Durango Silverton. The Durango Silverton ride, while shorter, is more dramatic as you travel through the forest and along a very sheer mountain face looking down at the river gorge.

I used to work as a guide on the 1880 train in the Black Hills and the engineers/conductors all said this train ride was the best around. They were absolutely right! My husband and I went in mid-October and there about 90 people spread over 12 cars, so COVID distancing was no problem. There were only 6 people in our coach car. The train experience is not very commercial compared to other tourist trains. The train and the scenery speaks for itself, so it doesn't need much else. We departed from Antonito, went to Osier for lunch and then back by train (motor coaches aren't being used because of COVID). The first hour of the ride was through fairly ugly high desert scrub and I really thought we had wasted our money. But then the engine went up the mountain and the scenery was breathtaking! Golden aspen were everywhere and the views of the mountainside were awesome. We passed through 2 tunnels and many cool rock formations. The turn-around was at Osier where they served a buffet-style lunch of classic comfort food. Then it was back to the beautiful scenery again. It was a long ride (about 7 hours, so be prepared if you have children). If you can only take one train ride, this is the one!

Amazing! We've lived in Colorado for 45 years and finally made this trip happen for our family, and it did not disappoint. My husband is disabled and I have mobility limitations. The train staff were very caring, prepared, and helpful to accommodate our needs. We took the longer trip, and the midday meal experience was fabulous. Delicious food served hot, nobody went away hungry. But the main reason we want to go again is the scenery. We had views of the landscape that were jaw-dropping. We highly recommend this gem of a trip!

This was truly the experience of a lifetime. The experience of the ride coupled with the vast historical knowledge of the staff and volunteers was staggering. There is no way to describe the feeling of looking out over the Rockies from over 10,000 feet up. The dinner stop in Chalma was a nice break and the turkey dinner in the mess hall was quite tasty. Definitely worth the price (just over $120 US) and something unforgettable you can relive when you look at the (many) photos you will take. Be prompt, as they leave exactly on schedule. Even in warm weather, bring a jacket so you can spend time on the open car without freezing.

We rode this train from Antonio to Chama in early September. We were in the Parlor car, the last car on the train. This day the train had 24 cars, but our guide said on a previous day the train had twice as many cars.
Our attendant, Fem, was very knowledgeable about the area. She was very attentive to everyone in the car and took great care of us on the first half of the trip. Our attendant on the afternoon leg was Kathy, and she was excellent as well. It was fun learning about the history of the area and movies that included the train in a scene.
We stopped at the dining hall in Osier for a delicious buffet lunch, then continued to Chama.
The bus ride back was also nice, allowing us to see from the road some areas we passed by on the train.

Antonito is a small village with limited tourist services but it is my preferred departure point for trips on the Cumbres & Toltec. You may choose to ride from Antonito to Osier Station and return by train or ride through to Chama and return by bus. While the ride from Antonito starts on a dusty plain it climbs to more expansive views than the Chama end of the line. I would advise wearing eye protection if you want to spend much time in the open air on the gondola car or the platforms between the cars because of fly ash generated from the firebox.

This is a great way to spend a day wandering thru the mountains. The coal-fired engine and restored passenger cars are beautiful, and surpassed only by the relaxing and scenic ride thru the mountains. The open air car provides great views and smells of the mountains, although you also experience some authentic coal smoke from time to time (it’s part of the experience). This isn’t just a train ride … it’s an authentic experience!

This was our 3rd ride on this Steam Train. All 3 times we had picture perfect weather so we stood the whole 64 miles in the open car. A volunteer “talks” through a microphone telling all the history of the Rails in the open car. They offer so many ways to ride. You go through 5 different types of zones so to speak and some awesome views and geology ! Train stops about 1/2 way for a All you can eat Lunch & Desert which actually is pretty good ! They start a Train from each end in morning but Chama Train arrives first to Lunch area so those people are almost done eating when you arrive so you don’t have to wait to eat. Fall Color Train would be a photographers dream !

If you plan to ride only one narrow gauge railroad (Cumbres or Silverton) this one is the best by far. If you can ride in fall, it is spectacular. We had a deluxe car which was comfortable and, we could go out on the gondola car for better views and docent talks. It only took a few minutes for the train to take you into lands where you couldn't see roads or towns. The car attendants gave historic information all along the way. The landscape views were wonderful as you're up high looking out at hillsides and valleys. You weren't closed in by trees or high canyon walls. (Because the kitchen burned a couple weeks before we rode, the lunch we paid big bucks for were horrible cold sandwiches. I assume the hot lunch is good, but we got screwed. The box lunch we got could have been so much better.) You could get on either side of the train into a position where you could take a good photo or get a good view even if you weren't sitting right in that spot. The bus ride back was pleasant with the bus driver giving interesting and different information than the train people. There are so many ways to take this ride but Antonito to Chama - return by bus is the best. (recommend staying in Alamosa) The only down side is that if you email a question, you won't get a response.

I'm going to be booking the Antonito Express ride and want to know which side of the car has the best views going to and from Osier. I've heard the left side on the way out, and the right side on the way back. Is that how the diagram of the seats is displayed in the purchasing area? If I choose the left hand seats will it be the left side of the train?
Thanks!

I fractured my shoulder 2 weeks ago and am in a sling and quite sore. A friend told me the train jostles about a lot. Her husband with a bad back was bothered by it. She recommended I not go because I would find the motion uncomfortable on my shoulder. Has anyone had that kind of experience?
Written October 6, 2020
Sometimes the train has to stop on an uphill grade. If it does, when it starts again, the jolt is pretty strong. Other than that, it’s like any other train with vibration experienced by the passengers.

Fall colors in southern Colorado occur about 2 weeks behind central and northern Colorado. It is always a guess but for this year that guess is late September - early October. Many of the aspens up high viewed from the C&TSR already looked dry and faded. There were even a few aspens that had changed to yellow.

I recommend the Classic Coach and it is $99.75 per person. They also have discounts for veterans.

Which is the nearest Amtrak station?
Written April 24, 2019
Wow just saw this question. I think only 3 Amtrak stops in CO: Denver, Grand Junction & La Junta; all about 4 hours or more from Antonito train station.

What is the weather like in the middle of January? Are the train cars heated?
Written October 28, 2018
The last day to ride this year was Oct 21st. Their website shows May 25 thru Oct 21 of 2018 for operating days. I know there's lots of snow in those mountains.

Has anyone found a good place to board their dog in Chama while they rode the train? If so would you board your pet there again?
Written August 6, 2017
Not in Chama. However, in Antonito you could check with the folks at the Narrow Gauge Railroad Inn (Phone: 866-267-9053). They operate a dog rescue business so might be up to boarding a dog as well.
Written August 7, 2017
What side of the train should we be on going from Antonito?
Written April 3, 2017
It definitely doesn't matter. The windows are big enough to have a great view from any seat. Plus you get to move around the train and are able to trade seats after the lunch order is taken, and the conductor takes tickets. Very liberal on seating accomidationis.
