Amazing and difficult! Enjoyed the long day with my 24 yo son. The hike up and down Mt Democrat is not for the faint at heart. Oxygen is scarce, it’s steep but the views and the feeling of accomplishment is spectacular. Take a lot of water, lunch and snacks. Take your time and enjoy the journey! Layer up because you take them off and put them back on throughout the hike on a cool day. The wind blows hard at certain parts and the sun beats down on a beautiful blue bird CO day. The way back down isn’t easy either. Enjoy!

It costs $3 for day use here and I think it was maybe $8 to camp. It is well worth it. The parking area is kept clean. We went on a Wednesday and it appeared that trash had been picked up between the time that we went and time that we returned. We had planned to pick up the area but it was done. The hike is really a nice scenic trip past some old mine ruins. When you reach the saddle you will probably need a wind parka. We had winds around 30 mph. If you don't need it then count yourself lucky. As usual leave early and be headed down before noon to avoid lightening.

The road up to Kite lake is really pretty, with lots of wildflowers and waterfalls to see. Once at the lake, you can pick one of several 14’ers to hike. There is a $3 fee to park on the honor system. We

Bagged another 14er. I was only able to summit Democrat. Will be back another time to get Cameron, Lincoln, and Bross. Not bad for and old dude. Gettting to the false summit is tough with steep incline and lots of large rocks. For the most part you have to pick your own trail in this section. Make sure to take $3 for the parking area.

If you are ready you can climb 4 14er's in a day. Start with Bross and go counterclockwise. People are very friendly. Take $3 cash for the parking fee and go early as space is limited in the lot but you can park on the side of the road. Be aware of the Alma authorities - they watch the speed carefully.
