I knew the weather was nice and it was a weekday so I started at 0800. Normally with summer afternoon storms you should start earlier. I had a fairly brisk pace and did all four in 5 hrs. My Democrat was a good challenge...after that in order Cameron...Lincoln...Bross. They were fairly easy. One big tip....once you have summited Bross...consider backtracking to Democrat-Cameron saddle and go down as you came up or maybe there is another way down. Going down the full loop is very very steep and super slippery. At points you almost have to run down and I still fell a lot.

The road up to Kite lake is really pretty, with lots of wildflowers and waterfalls to see. Once at the lake, you can pick one of several 14’ers to hike. There is a $3 fee to park on the honor system. We

Bagged another 14er. I was only able to summit Democrat. Will be back another time to get Cameron, Lincoln, and Bross. Not bad for and old dude. Gettting to the false summit is tough with steep incline and lots of large rocks. For the most part you have to pick your own trail in this section. Make sure to take $3 for the parking area.

Our friends brought us up Buckskin Road along a very bumpy ride to Kite Lake and Mt. Democrat.
I was glad that I did not have dentures and grateful that my friend had 4 wheel drive.
The weather was a cool 46 degrees and foggy.
We hiked awhile so we could see Kite Lake below.
We then headed to Windy Ridge back down the road and were greeted with a great view south to Fairplay plus the Spinney Mt. Range.
The highlight for me was seeing a small grove of BristleCone Pines, over 1500 years old.
These trees are so majestic and withstand all the elements and still survive!
We then drove down to the Alma Cemetery, established formally by Teddy Roosevelt in 1902.
It is truly an eclectic place with graves dating back to the early 1800's, Civil War veterans and recent burials.
A trip thru history, actually.
Alma turned out to be a real surprise and one of the best days ever in the mountains.

When driving to this location make sure you are careful since the road is very rocky.

Once you arrive, you will have the chance to enjoy some great views and walks. Plan to arrive early in the day so you have plenty of time to hike before the temperatures drop.

It is a 6 mile drive on a bumpy dirt road (CR8, Buckskin Rd) off Highway 9 in Alma, to get to the Kite Lake Trailhead for MT Democrat. Last 1/2 mile of this road is rougher with some pretty deep ruts (Sept 2015). If you don't mind the risk of scraping the bottom of your car, go for it. I had a high clearance vehicle, but did see several older cars that made it up to Kite Lake. $3 parking fee, to fund the bathrooms, worth it. Trail to Democrat is 2.75 miles to top, 2000 ft elevation gain. SO it is steep, much steeper as you get closer to the top. Last .75 mile is across a very steep boulder field, trail is faint, so watch your step. Can be very windy towards top, gusts were 50mph or so the day we were there. of course stupendous views at top (1 false summit, so don't be fooled)

Hiked this starting at Kite Lake trailhead. The road in is rough, but most cars will do fine if approached cautiously. Did the hike with my two youngest children who are 11 and 7 (both are also hikers, and Scouts). They enjoyed the short distance involved (approximately two miles to the summit and of course two miles return for a total of four mile round trip) since they could carry less gear. I enjoyed it for the same reason, however, still brought basic safety equipment. Which is an important point to make. Regardless of how many people summited, or how short the hike is, it's still a class II trail and weather is a significant risk. We ALWAYS carry a lifeshelter emergency shelter, snacks, adequate water, cold weather gear, and a method of communication. On Mt. Democrat, you will likely have a cel phone signal the entire way - so just ensure you have battery power for the entire trip. Making the summit took us two hours. The two areas of exposure are at the saddle and at the summit. Much of the hike is otherwise protected from the predominant winds. You will need wind protection on most days.

Our family of 7 is not a big group of hikers - we just like really beautiful scenery!! When I asked a local shopkeeper in Fairplay what they recommended in the area, she told me that we were missing some of the best scenery in the area by not driving up to Kite Lake. Once it was established that we had a sturdy 4-wheel drive vehicle, she highly recommended we go, so away we went with my husband, an excellent driver, at the wheel. Now, let me start by saying - If you are not a good driver, or if you have a small car - don't make this trip!! The road is ridden with pot holes that could easily swallow up a small car and the entire drive up is ROUGH - VERY ROUGH. But, the views along the way are FANTASTIC (crumbling gold mines along the edges of the mountains) and the view from the top - Kite Lake Campground is out-of-this-world beautiful!!! It started sleeting after we were up there a while, and there is a little snow on the ground even in July. There are so many different varieties of wildflowers that the nature-lovers in our group were totally enthralled. We hiked around a bit, did a geocache, and then drove back down after taking some wonderful family photos there. This ended up being one of the favorite things of our Colorado vacation. Loved it.

I drove up to Kite Lake, where the trail starts, and camped out overnight. It's $12 to camp overnight and well worth it. You can also arrive early and pay just $3 or park down the road for free if you are cheap. The road up is rough in spots and was very rough right before the parking area so be careful. I started at 6 am and made it to the top of Democrat at 9 am. Pretty straight forward up with no way to get lost. That said it is still pretty tough if you are not in the best shape or acclimated to the altitude. You can also tag 3 other 14'ers from here if you decide to do the Decalibron which consists of Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln, and Bross. All are connected via a trail. I highly suggest wearing hiking boots although I saw people with trail runners and pack warm clothes, it can be quit cold on top even during the summer. The scenery was spectacular to say the least, well worth the struggle to get to the top.

Wow what a hike. Leave early for this trek up. The kite lake trail head sits about 6 miles off the main road from alma. All dirt a little bumpy but doable even in a smaller car just check clearance and watch potholes. The kite lake trail head has free and fee parking just 3 for the day. The initial hike out is a gradual climb. Trail is well marked. About half the way up you will experience Rick scrambles. And boulders. I would say an intermediate climb. Be on the lookout for marmots and mining marmots they are the small furry creatures that spend most of their time collecting flowers for the winter. Most of te climb is a series of switch backs and loose scramble rock and shale. Take care and wear the correct shoes for this one. I strongly recommend hiking boats and no tennis shoes or sandals your feet will tha k you later. The last you will reach a false summit and once over this your will have another half mile to go to the summit. Se flat terrain and then last incline to the top. There is a market atop to take photos with so take a phone or camera to get a pic. Safe travels and have fun making tracks. and have fun t
