About
The Airport in the Sky occupies a 1,602-foot-tall mountaintop at the center of the Catalina Island, 10 miles from the city of Avalon. It's a great destination by tour or shuttle bus, bicycle, on foot whether hiking the Trans Catalina Trail or walking over from Black Jack, or of course, via private or chartered small plane. Its single 3,250-foot-long runway was constructed by blasting and leveling two adjacent peaks, then using the resulting debris to fill in the gaps. The image is of a T-34 Beechcraft that flew in to participate in one of the Airport in the Sky's monthly Aeroclub Fly-In Days.

Very unique airport

Getting to this airport by land, or air is not for the faint of heart!
We took a land trip in a somewhat questionable vehicle, another review, but once there we enjoyed the beauty of the buildings.
There is also a restaurant there which we only bought a very good cookie.
Great location but not worth the couple of hours from your vacation.

Interesting bit of history, nice views, old planes, and a little gift and snack shop with good cookies.

Brunch on the TCT
May 2021
When it it is 2.2 miles from Black jack campground, you don't bother to make breakfast. You hoof it over to the airport and get the Bison burgers and the fresh baked cookies! It is pricey ~$18 for a burger and a drink but you don't have to bring out the stove. If you take the long paved road to the airport you can see the big 20+ herd of Bison as well. The Army training exercises of rebuilding the runway looks great! Enjoy!

We been to the "airport in the sky" a couple of times during our Bison tours. There's a lot of history behind it's creation and has a quaint little shop and restaurant for food and nick knacks.

I was taken here on a tour February 28th...what a wonderful view and great tasting cookies!!! I saw and spoke with a few hikers and then proceeded down the hill to see the Bison. What an awesome day for a tour!

Interesting Part of Catalina
Feb 2020
Our Conservancy tour stopped here for a midpoint rest and we found both the high (for Catalina) location and historic nature most interesting. The airport only serves private planes so there is usually not a lot of traffic.

Small Airport but Vital for the Island

This is the quickest way to get to the mainland by air where the mainland can be seen in the distance on a clear day. This is mainly a heliport.
