We went on a weekday in Fall and there were very few people in the water. The ocean was glassy and visibility at 100'. The highlight was swimming between two big sea bass, about 4 to 5 feet long.

Descanso Beach is where you want to snorkel. Agewise depends on their swimming ability. I started snorkeling at 5. Do a web search for Catalina dive shops for the rental costs.
