Took a flying fish tour in Sep'15 through Afishinados charters. It was off-season but we saw hundreds of flying fish under the flashlight in night. Shiny beauties flying around the boat. Captain John and his fellow were just amazing and they knew where to go and made the whole experience happening. We saw sea lions jumping and hunting flying fish. Flying fish are known to defend themselves from their predator through flying mechanism but hunters are hunters! Definitely a must do in California!!

We had 49 participants on a 1-1/2 hour morning excursion. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. John's knowledge and humor was a highlight on the outing and his crew took great care of all of us. Our excursion on the Catallac was a high point on our weekend on Catalina.

My wife and our 11 year old daughter booked the 2 harbors trip on the Afishinados Catallac Charter. We expected a bit of a "yawner" but Captain John and his first mate made the trip very memorable and fun. First of all, the boat is new, very clean and goes very fast. Unlike some of the other boats we have taken over the years, this boat does not smell of exhaust or gas, so that made for a very pleasant experience. The first mate serves up beer and wine from the cabin below deck. The cabin is large enough for about 15 people to sit and relax, but the real fun is above deck. There are plenty of places to hang out and watch the sides on the boat. The Captain lets you go anywhere, including the smaller, elevated, pilots area up above.
Besides providing lots of information about the island and Two Harbors, Captain John noticed a pod of dolphins about 3/4 of a mile east of our course and he immediately changed detoured so we could get a better look. We caught up with the dolphins and we followed them, and sort of chased us for the next 20 minutes. I got the feeling that John cared more about us getting a good look at the dolphins than he did about the schedule or how much extra gas he was using for the detour. Two Harbors was fun -- I definitely recommend the buffalo milk! On the trip back Captain John called up my 11 year old daughter and let her steer the boat (picture attached). We bought our tickets while shopping on the main street of Avalon at the Afishinado art/jewelry store. Over the years we have done the submarine, dolphen quest, zip lines, Hummer tours, but I would rate the Catallac charter top of the list because it was so much fun and I felt we got a lot more than we paid for. I give it an excellent rating.

Over the last seven years I have taken this excursion at least three other times. Each time in the past not only did we get to see some flying fish near Lovers Cove, the boat continue down to see and hear all the seals at seal rock and see the quarry at the south east end of the island. It was a full hour adventure.

However August 2019 the boat barely left Avalon Harbor down to lovers Cove and turned around.
It was a much much shorter trip, and although we saw some flying fish, it now misses out on a lot of what made this great night time fun.

It’s still OK, just nearly as good as it used to be.

My husband, daughter and I booked the Flying Fish tour during our recent vacation on Catalina Island. We were not sure what we could expect during the evening out as we had never witnessed a flying fish. Well, the tour exceeded every expectation that we had. We saw hundreds of Flying Fish, seals, cranes and the beautiful sites around the island with an amazing sunset for added beauty. The Captain offered some great history and information on the island as we were looking for the fish. What an amazing evening. This will be permanently on our agenda when visiting the island. Thank you Afishinados!!!!!!!

We were fortunate enough to be invited to celebrate a wedding anniversary with family. It was a charter for the full day. Trip was out to Two Harbors and back. On the way stopped at various locations for fishing and swimming. Captain John was great he laughs at his own jokes and gave us a historical lesson on Catalina Island. We caught a few fishes wished it was more but otherwise had a great time.

We had some light migration years in 2015-16. However, it looks like our kelp forests are rebuilding which will give the flying fish the refuge they need to visit out island in numbers this year -2017. Let's hope they do!

My nephew, son and myself went out fishing with Scott. He was such a great captain. We caught 5 different types of fish. Scott filleted them and recommended we go to the Lobster Trap to have them cooked for us. What a fabulous experience to eat our fresh catch of the day. This was such a memorable trip for us.

Your trip is the ideal fishing charter that we strive to deliver for every customer. Catch some quality fish, learn about Catalina Island, develop some new angling skills and then return to Avalon and enjoy the fruits of your labor with the freshest fish you will ever eat. We hope you visit again soon.

Thank you Captain Scott, we had a blast especially after catching that beautiful sheep head fish. My whole family was raving about the picture we took. You were also very informative about the island and its history which was great to know since it was our first time on the Island. You were also very helpful with you fishing expertise and teaching us the correct way to fish, we appreciate your patience. We are definitely coming back and booking another trip with you this year. Thank you again.

I've done many fishing trips on the gulf coast from Florida but this is my first experience in the Pacific. It was not a disappointment!! My friend and I made 3 passes with 7 nets and brought home EIGHT 3 to 5 pound spiny lobsters. It was totally worth it and we ate the first two less than an hour after we returned to shore. I'd definitely recommend this trip!
