My wife and I chose the kayak adventure while we were on a cruise stopping in the Catalina islands. We chose the earliest expedition and were the only 2 people on the excursion.
Having zero kayak experience, the guides were very knowledgeable and helpful. They provide with water proof pants and a jacket if it is cold on the water. You also have the choice of using a single or 2 person kayak.
While out on the ocean, we paddled past dozens of wild dolphins who swam around and under our kayak. They came right up to the kayak and we had a great view of them feeding, and jumping. We also got to see a large amount of leopard sharks, sea lions, harbour seals, jellyfish, various other brightly coloured fish, ospreys and diving ducks. The guide (JP) was great at pointing out all the marine life and seemed truly excited and passionate about his job. It is a one of a kind experience that you truly have to see to believe. This was one of the best experiences for natural wildlife ever. Do this excurstion

I was in Catalina in February and a group of us did the kayak trip. We saw sharks and lots of seals and in general had a fun time. The weather for February was very nice so we really took advantage of it by doing this trip. The staff and guides were fun and informative.

Booked through Carnival Cruise Lines. Staff was waiting at the dock for us. After group gathered, we walked towards the Casino building (come to find out it really isn't a casino) and along the way was given the history of the island, some of its buildings and the people. Short walk on we arrived at the Descanso Beach Ocean Sports.

A briefing was given on how to paddle and what to do if we fell out of our kayak. Water protective gear & Water shoes given to those who needed them.

Once in the water we paddled to the left and went down to a large rock called frog rock. Got out onto the rocky beach for a few minutes, enjoyed their homemade cookies and then paddled back. Along the way we saw large "gold" fish, lots of kelp and leopard sharks.

Only thing that would of made it better if there was longer time in the water. But it was as advertised.

It is great for families or beginners. Not strenuous.

Took the 3pm tour which included me, a young couple and a dad/son. Scott gave us the option of doing the norm and going to frog rock where we could go on the beach and eat a cookie to rest OR we could skip the beach and go further down were leopard sharks can be seen. It was unanimous, sharks it was. We saw bunches of them up close, no fears and then saw a seal, a bald eagle ( they are bigger than you think), jelly fish etc... Scott really knows his stuff and didn't just give the Eco lecture. It was more of a informal question session and if he spotted something, he pointed it out. High value activity, more than worth the price. Would do again and again. Ask for Scott's tour. By the way, we got the cookie when we got back. Scott also took pictures of us and emailed them to us.mreally personalized the tour.

ABSOLUTELY loved this company! I took the adventure with some experience behind me. Met the guide on the Green Pier and he walked us through town and stopped along the way to give us some history on Catalina. Met at their place (short easy walk) and got some quick instruction, signed our lives away, put on our life jackets and were in the water within 15 minutes. We happened to get Teri as our guide (LOVE her!!!) and we all noticed quite a few dolphins in the water that morning. She had us get in the kayaks quickly and head on out away from shore to see if we could get close...and we did! We did not disturb the dolphins (there must have been hundreds!) but came within 15 - 20 feet of them. I was hoping they'd be more curious and come visit but they didn't. The water was clear and smooth except for the occasional boat wake. The kayaks they give you are ocean kayaks; pretty hard to tip over. Had a lovely break on Frog Rock with some wonderful homemade (by a local bakery) chocolate chip/oatmeal cookies. Got to know a few of our fellow kayakers better and really enjoyed the trip.

Tip for So Cal locals: If you don't already know, Catalina Express gives you a free ride on your birthday! Worth the trip!!

Highly recommend!!

This was an awesome excursion I took while on the island from a cruise. Myself, a non swimmer, and a friend were paired up for this fun time and during the return trip to the beach we managed to flip the kayak and end up in the cold water. Thanks to a great set of instructions before the excursion began and some tremendous help from our guide, JP, we were able to get back onto the kayak and get safely back to shore. Many thanks to JP and the rest of the crew for an exceptional experience. As I mentioned, I can't swim and thanks to JP I stayed calm and he was able to assist me in getting back on the kayak and back to shore safely.

Renting a kayak and paddling around the harbor near Avalon was easy and fun. Just past the harbor there are several beaches were you can stop and enjoy some sun and time in the water. You will also enjoy seeing a wide variety of fish as you cruise around.

If you're looking for a place to kayak in Southern California, Catalina Island is the best! Kayak rentals are reasonable, crew members were friendly and will definitely take care of you!

Our group of five had three prior kayakers and two noobs. The instructors made it all sound so easy, and explained a lot of the background of the island. Definitely a great thing to do while visiting Catalina! Would do this again in a heartbeat.

Don't forget to bring your phone- they do offer protective cases for such things. The tour guide we had was fun and knew a lot about the island. We almost got to see a pod of dolphins feeding up close- but their food got scared off by some speed boats (sad face). But it was still a lot of fun- I would do it again.
