Located inside the old county courthouse. Stop to look at the building, even if the museum is closed, as the building itself is very impressive.

Interesting, low key, historic displays, a nice break from the weather and as an interlude for other more active activities. Plus I learned a lot: so much better than just looking something up on the internet!

We stopped at the museum after having lunch and before the Christmas Parade. The museum provides overview of early Placer County history. It also includes the Placer County Gold collection, the renowned Pate Collection of American Indian artifacts.

Thoroughly enjoyed visiting this museum. It has many local artifacts relating to Auburn and the gold rush history of the area. A great film runs continuously giving additional historic information. A must see on a visit to Auburn

Auburn is a neat little city with its share of old-time gold miners' history, yet enough charm and sophistication for today's travelers. Neat "grand" buildings reflecting its heyday in addition to funky but well-maintained structures of its heyday. Museum retains much of its original character....More

This museum housed in the rustic and refurbished jewel in Auburn. I was fortunate to have an inside view of one of the original courtrooms. I stood in the holding cell where the accused stayed until they were called to the courtroom. This was a...More

The museum isn't very big, but they do sell bags with small flecks of gold, so the kids can actually pan for gold. The museum was very informative about the life of a prospector and mining. Plus, it is free, so that was nice.
