Took the family with five kids (ages 14,12,10,7,3) on the two hour tour. It was the highlight of our trip to AZ. Smoky was fantastic. He was a great tour guide, he had a good sense of humor. He was our personal off roading encyclopedia. He knew all kinds of fun facts about wildlife and all of the different cactuses and plants. He knew history of the region and even told us some stories about Gold mining in the Superstition Mountains. He also raced up a bunch of steep embankments to get some thrills and yells from the kids. All in all a wonderful day. It rained and it was cold for a little bit and they gave us ponchos and blankets and we did just great. For all of the time and effort that you spend going on vacation, I highly recommend this. It’s educational and fun and personal. I think the kids will remember this forever.

C.J. did an excellent job telling us the history of the area, particularly identifying the cacti, the mountain ranges, the gold prospecting and some on the geology on our 90 minute tour. And we could hear!! The demonstration of the Teddy Bear Cactus and its fish hook needles prompted me to go online to do some further research. That is one cactus we all need to avoid! This was the best part of the tour! We were in a covered Jeep so did not need sunscreen nor sunglasses. There was not an opportunity to take pictures which was disappointing. Appreciated the Apache Trail scarves C.J. gave us for our 55th anniversary engagement! Thanks!

My Aunts brought me to the Goldfield Ghost Town (which was fantastic) and then we saw the sign for the Apache Trail Tours and we were in! We only chose the 30 minute tour as we had other sights to see that day. If I come back, I’ll choose the longer one. We were lucky enough to get “Sidewinder” as our guide. As soon as Sidewinder started the tour I knew we were in for a treat. He was so informative, literally knew every single type of cactus we passed, shared native history, shared gold rush history, had an answer to all our questions AND...he was a blast on four wheels!! There was some squirrely hills we climbed up and went down and he was a pro!! If you come to the Gold Mine, take an Apache Tour! You will not regret it!!

Took a 90 minute Jeep tour through the desert with Sidewinder as my guide. I was able to see and learn about the dessert in ways I couldn’t possibly do in my car alone. He was a wealth of information. The trails were rough, but he safely guided us over the difficult terrain, while still telling about the plants and the history of the area. I would do it again.

This offload tour of the desert is perfect for anyone touring Arizona for the first time and wants to see the beauty outside the city . The roads were rougher than expected and 4WD was a must, which I consider a plus. Our guide Smokey is the best. He was funny and informative, and kept us entertained. His senses are much keener than Sidewinder! For example, there is a big rock with green lichen on it; and he can see a half-dozen animals on it that nobody else can see.

We took a 90 minute tour in February 2020 and had a great time. Our guide was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of history and folklore throughout the journey. It was fun to sit back and soak in the views and information. This is a great way to see the desert with basically no effort (as opposed to hiking/biking). It is a bit of a bumpy ride so may not be a great choice for the elderly depending on their fitness level. However, the guide drove carefully and tried to make it as smooth as possible so it was just fine for our family - ages ranged from 11 to 66. I would highly recommend this tour and company!

Absolutely fantastic hour touring the Sonoran Desert for one hour on a picture perfect sunny & cool winter morning. Our tour guide was Boots and she gave an incredible amount of information on the flora, fauna and history of the area. The vehicle moves slowly so there is plenty of time for pictures and questions. You could hear Boots very clearly through the speaker system. I had never seen the desert from this perspective so it was a great experience and worth every single penny. We were a group of four and there was another family of four seated behind us. If you are staying in Tempe/Phoenix the location is about a 35-40 minute drive east of the city.

Our family of 2 adults and 2 kids (5 and 9) had a great time on the 2 hour tour. The guide (Sidewinder!) was super informative and answered lots of our questions along with sharing cool historical information. It’s a bit pricey, but it’s a unique experience for sure and that’s what we wanted.
The Goldmine town is also great to spend a few hours in. The mine tour was cool, stores are touristy but then again, that’s exactly what we were there for! My kids loved the gold panning activity and we found some awesome little gems and gold flakes. The man in the gold panning store was so helpful in showing us how to do the panning and really engaged my kids. Everyone in the whole town was very friendly and we had a nice day. Food at the Mammoth restaurant was nothing great, but a quick lunch and was fine- sit on the outside deck for a stunning view of the mountains. Enjoy!

We booked the 2-hr 4x4 desert tour with Apache Trail Tours in early March 2022. Smokey was our tour guide/driver. He was EXCELLENT! Although the tour's route involves a short highway access to desert trails, we were soon in the heart of the desert and on trails that were rocky with inclines and descents. Be prepared to "rock and roll" a bit but Smokey was an excellent driver who minimized what could have been body-jarring motion. Smokey also was able to narrate almost non-stop as we went along. We enjoyed the stops for demonstrations at various points. We learned a lot about the history of Ghostfield town, various desert plants and animals, as well as the history of gold in the area. All information was delivered in a clear, informative manner with occasional humour which was very entertaining and interesting. It is obvious that Smokey not only "knows his stuff" but is passionate and enthusiastic about sharing it with others. We appreciated the provision of blankets and water as well. All in all a very interesting excursion, one we're glad we booked! Highly recommended! We also enjoyed strolling through the Goldfield Ghost Town afterwards.

I am taking a 5 day road trip from Phoenix, passing through Canyon De Chelly, then up to Monument Valley, ending in Flagstaff. Aside from these two sites, I am interested in Hopi and Navaho culture as well as beautiful scenery. Can anyone suggest a driving itinerary?

Hi- coming out to Phoenix for work in late January. Be there for two weeks- what would be the ideal tour for one person, coming out on a Saturday with nothing better to do! Last time out I took the 2 hour "Broken Arrow" tour in Sonoma with Pink Jeep and loved it! What's your recommendation.

We would need to add you to another group but in January that will be no problem at all!
We have so many options to choose from: rugged off-road desert, smooth, scenic canyon tours, educational gold panning and combo tours with the Dolly Steamboat.
On our website, I would recommend looking at the 2 hour Dutchman 4x4 tour and the Surf & Turf that would showcase everything.

We are planing a trip to AZ and my 7 1/2 year old is adamant that gold panning is on the itinerary. We also have a 2 year old, would you recommend they come? Can a car seat be installed in the jeeps? Thanks!

It doesn't look like my reply posted so resubmitting. Our minimum age is 3 years and yes, you are welcome to bring your own car seats.
Written August 29, 2016
The jeeps are a couple of different sizes and the larger ones can hold a group of seven comfortably. The smallest one is a typical jeep with a three to four person capacity. Both times I have gone my group was alone on the tour, but it depends on the tour and your group size as to whether you will be traveling with another group.

For a family b/t ages 10 to 67, is the jeep tour of 4x4 better for your 1st visit? We hope to see wild flowers, etc. Going next week. 1 hr or 2 hr tour? What do you recommend, so that everyone will have fun & not be too hot or get bored or have too much hiking? Thanks!

If no one in your group has back/neck/hip concerns, I would recommend the 4x4 off-road desert tour. We offer one hour, 90 min and 2 hour options. They are all loop trails so the longer you are out, the more picture stops there are and the more you hear about the plants/animals, history, legends and lore. I would recommend reservations as soon as possible. With spring break, our days are filling quickly.

How long do you actually pan for gold on the jeep tour?

Approximately one hour/15 minutes. The rest of the time is the Jeep ride to/from the panning sight.
