Just after leaving Alpine and turning east, we were following the Snake River. This beautiful area, popular with river rafter groups, has overlooks looking down into the Snake River Canyon. US 89 and 26 are busy truck route highways so it was hard to find a safe place to pull off. When I did, it was well worth it!

We were coming from Jackson, Wyoming, going to Logan, Utah and had to drive through this canyon on scenic route 89. It was just opened, since an avalanche of dirt had closed the road. This has to be some of the most beautiful scenery in the US, with the Snake River on the side and great mountains looming overhead. There are pull-outs and picnic areas along the way, with few commericals establishments. Not much to do, but a great area to see.

In my younger days I shot the rapids often but more recently have enjoyed the woods and meadows and gravel bars along the Snake River in more meditative musings. The forest service campgrounds and picnic areas along hwy 89 have over the years provided joy for my family. And the canyons northwest of the highway are little known, utterly undeveloped and quite inviting.
But even just to drive thorough, the canyon is a delight. This time of the year, look above the road just northeast of Alpine for mountain goats! Sometimes they are on the road so be careful, especially at night!

We went when the water was low and though it was still class 3 – it was very safe and fun! The only concern is the magnetic wall and all the weird underwater currents and faults. Champagne rapid is awesome – lots of bubbles, very cool. You can take the meat if you have an experienced ore-man – we had a 10’ boat and were fine. Kayakers were enjoying the rapids as much as rafters.
