I thought I would have a hard time locating this attraction, but I did not. People are milling around it to take pictures of the back side of the White House, not of this attraction!
There is no adequate signage about the Zero Milestone. The engravings are not very clear and distinct and therefore, it was difficult to read its inscriptions. People are just ignoring it.

Another odd marker is the Zero Milestone, which was dedicated on June 4, 1923 and located south of the White House in President’s Park. This marker was expected to be the milestone from which all road distances in the U.S. would be reckoned. That did not happen. So, it only anchors roads distances in Washington, DC. It is an inscribed granite block, with a big brass compass on top, about four feet high. I wonder if tourists take the time to read about it. They mostly seem to set their cameras on it to take pictures of The White House.

It is an old tradition to mark distances from a central location starting point. Rome had a golden Zero Mile Marker in the forum. England had one in London. Well, Washington had one to - but not THIS one! L'Enfant, the original Washington D.C. Zero Miple Marker was to be a column in Lincoln Park, a dozen blocks east to the Capitol Building. That never happened. Jefferson erected one, but nobody paid much attention to it. Then in 1920 this marker was placed when America was beginning its 'Roadway Boom'. It is situated only about 50 feet west of the spot reserved for the National Christmas Tree. An interesting anachronism, and modern take on a very old idea. Enjoy!

Geography nuts who collect places of geographic importance must visit the site. Right in front of the Whitehouse, surrounded by any number of tourists who couldn’t care less, but a great stop.

The Zero Milestone is located near the White House, in fact it is a small stone on the East side where the spot to view the White House. If you go there in summer or at the peak time of people coming to see the White House, you may not even see or notice it. It is supposed to be a point zero distance of road in the country. Thus far only road in Washington D.C. When you come to see the White House, stop and take a photo or two of this piece of history.

If you on your way from the reflecting pool to the White house the Zero mile marker block can be easily missed or ignored, not a great deal to see but well worth the pit stop.

The zero milestone in DC was designed to mimic Romes forum as the center pinnacle of the US With the system of highways radiating from Washington to all of the United States boundaries. There is a small marker here.
