Located at a busy intersection in front of the DC District Court this memorial honors General Meade, who is best known for defeating General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg. It's an impressive memorial with a beautiful design and a splash of golden color. It's in a non-touristy location but if you happen to be nearby I'd recommend a small detour to check it out.

PROS
* Interesting sculpture
* Amazing architecture
* Historical figure of importance to us
* Prime position opposite National Archives

CONS
Lonely and isolated location

β€œI VISITED THIS PLACE”…
… when i was marching down the mother of Pennsylvania Avenue from our Capitol Building.

I was interested in and looking for interesting, museums and monuments, and I found this.

It is significant because he was a major union general during the Civil War, and won the battle of Gettysburg, defeating the Confederates.

Also, my mother worked at Fort George G. Meade in Maryland.

ADVICES
If you are in the area, find the statue and visit it- as stated, it is impressive.

We stayed in Manassas and while it was Confederate territory the people were nice but there were many statues and symbols of the South and of Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. While we were in Arlington National Cemetery, there’s the Custis Lee Mansion. Needless to say, I was relieved to finally see some Civil War heroes that represented the North. This statue is situated very close to the White House and you won’t miss it. It is actually one of the nicer statues you’ll find in D.C. It’s not a 30 minute stop and I’d say more like a 10 minutes stop but I’d do it again as it’s pretty cool.

It’s another memorial to see whilst walking along in Washington DC. I like these kinds of monuments there striking and makes you think but doesn’t take forever to visit.

Visitors from out of town or locals should consider a self-guided tour of the downtown heritage trail should consider adding this memorial to the sightseeing. The memorial is situated next to Marshall Park and right behind the D.C. Supreme Court. According to the history, it was built to honor General George Meade, a career military officer from Pennsylvania who is best known for defeating General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg. The memorial is considered a public artwork in Washington D.C. There are plenty of places to visit in the same area and many good place to eat in Penn Quarter nearby.

This memorial to Meade is a little over the top. It looks like a cross between a coronation and a beatification. He did, of course, lead the Union troops to victory in the pivotal battle of the Civil War. A really big, big deal at the time.
It is on Pennsylvania Ave, so will you will see it if you take the walk from the White house to the Capitol.
