I didn’t realize that this park was under construction when I visited. The fountains and lower portion are closed off to the public. The upper part is still open and lots of people running and walking their dogs. Great wooded area. Once it’s finished it should be very nice. Has great potential.

This park has a perfect location and excellent bones as they say. It is a travesty then, that it is so neglected. It has a commanding viewpoint from the top of the hill, looking down on Washington. And what could be a stunning cascading fountain, that has clearly not been working for years as witnessed by the weeds growing in the empty pools. Big beautiful old trees, statues, inviting garden paths. We were happy we stumbled across it but it also says to us that Washington needs to invest more in it's public spaces that are for the people, and not the politicians.

Meridian Hill Park (AKA: Malcolm X Park) is a beautiful reminder of times past.
The fountain cascading down the hillside and the beautiful pool at the lower end of the park bring peace to the area. On the upper side of the park you can always find people doing something.
On many weekends you can find people playing music under the shade of the trees.
I have seen several couples taking wedding photos on the lower portion of the park near the reflecting pool.
It is a fun place to visit and while you’re at it you can visit Adams Morgan for a bite to eat and a drink in one of the many restaurants running along 18th Street NW between Florida Ave and Columbia Road.
My fiends and I ride bicycles there in the summer.

We went for the Sunday drum circle. What a unique DC experience! Everyone gathers and drums and dances or just people watch. Be warned.....lots of stairs to get to the top!

Was clearly once a beautiful and special place now sadly neglected and in total disrepair. Has the potential to be a remarkable respite in the city.. Instead the gardens are dead, the grass trampled to dirt, the statutes vandalized, fountains dry, trash strewn about. We found a prized parking spot and our car window was smashed while we visited mid day during the week. Not a friendly neighborhood; there were many, many people around and no one offered any assistance. The local police passed me off and didn’t respond. What a hassle.

After more than a year, the repairs on the fountain have been completed and it been running since June 11. It is worth the visit to this urban oasis.

First of all, there are literally 4 designated parking spaces, and local residents were using them as their own permanent parking spaces. The second day we tried to go, we finally took a chance and parked in a permit only resident spot. I’m glad we didn’t get a ticket, because what we found was a run-down, graffiti-tagged, littered dog park. Such a sad shame. This is the first National Park I’ve ever felt was a waste of my vacation time. The fountains you see in the old photos don’t work. There is no water anywhere. Trash covers the grounds and all of the grass has been worn away by dogs. It also stinks from dog waste.

Not sure what we were expecting as we were going off a 2007 National Park stamp, but what we found was a remnant if it’s former glory. Arriving at dusk we found a fountain system in disrepair and it had been for some time. Poorly lit the park was well used by surrounding residents but lacked little evidence of its glorious past. View of downtown has been obscured for many years by an uninteresting block of flats. Little parking so unless you have a particular interest would not bother. Such a shame....

I live nearby and can testify this is the most underrated destination in DC. Especially on a spring / summer day, go here for some rest between sight seeing. Bring a picnic or pick up some food nearby at Harris teeter.

We had an hour to spare in our trip when we located this park. This is beautifully done spreading over various levels. There were statues of various personalities displayed at these levels. The park is quite huge and very peaceful. The water flowing in the centre path makes it special, and the view from top is awesome.
