America’s story lives here! Built in 1816 by a granddaughter of Martha Washington, this National Historic Landmark was home to six generations of one family from the agricultural to the digital age. Their collections, household goods, landscaped garden and 200 years of stories shed light on American arts, labor, politics, and technology. Enjoy guided tours of the William Thornton-designed mansion and self-guided tours of the 5½-acre garden, including the 1919 Pierce Arrow motor car and the District’s oldest exhibited smoke house. CLOSED January and all Mondays.

We arrived just in time for the last tour of the day and the staff was super helpful letting both of us go even though there was only one space left. We have visited quite a few historic homes and what stood out at the Tudor Place was how much of the original furnishings and historic artifacts were still on... More

This is a great trip if you have a few hours in Georgetown. We had a very interesting guide although our tour was completely full and it was a bit packed together at times. The house is beautifully preserved and was the property of Martha Washington - George's Grand daughter so there is lots of history to listen to, read... More

Thanks for visiting us and the very kind feedback! We love that six generations of the Peter family lived at Tudor Place from 1805 to 1983- starting with Martha Washington's granddaughter, Martha Parke Custis Peter- which gives us a unique perspective into Georgetown, DC, and American history. Between all the Peter family objects and the Washington collection we have a... More

Discovered this place as a replacement tour stop. What a great, historical place! The curator changes out displays seasonally, but all are original artifacts to the home. The gardens are lovely, the home is outstanding. This is an original home to the Georgetown area that was lived in through at least the 1980's (?). The tour guide/intern was extremely knowledgeable... More

Our daughter took us to this place . She read about it some where. She lives near DC and is always exploring. I was expecting just another museum but this was different. So much history. It somehow shows 4 generations of the same family who owned the place. These were related to Geoge Washington. Fascinating.

Tudor Place stands apart from other historic house museums in the wide range of history associated with the house and grounds. As you mentioned, six generations of the Peter family called Tudor Place home for nearly 200 years with only four owners. The history of this neoclassical estate mirrors the history of the United States in its early years through... More

My partner and I were very impressed by Tudor Place. We arrived too early for a scheduled tour, but the docent took us through anyway. She was very knowledgeable and made the history of the house quite intimate. It is great visiting a home like this where all the furnishings and décor are still intact.

We came by chance to Tudor Place. It's reasonable price ($10)helped us decide to visit. As Australians, with limited knowledge of the area's history, we found this intimate look into the house informative and interesting. Our guide, whose name I can't remember was excellent. She was knowledgeable, interesting and welcoming. A nice way to spend an hour or so if... More

Informative and impressive home of George and Martha Washington descendants. Many original articles of the Washingtons, like a punch bowl used by the family on many occasions and a stool he built. Even if you just like seeing historical homes and gardens, this is a great choice. It is a little removed from the metro area, and is located in... More

This is a lovely home that housed 6 generations of Martha Washington's family, and parts of it look like they just left. This is a multi-generational home with layers of history and historic furnishings -- everywhere you look is something wonderful! It's about a 15 minute walk from the DuPont Circle Metro, but it's an easy walk down Q street.... More

We didn't tour the house--only the grounds--but they were interesting. The gardens are not as large or as elaborate as the nearby Dumbarton Oaks, but they're still enjoyable.

I wasn't impressed with the state of the gardens. I expected the, to be immaculate and manicured. They were either overgrown or spotty. I did not tour the house because of time restraints. But with limited time in DC this wouldn't have made the cut.

We take pride in the work that we do to preserve and interpret the historic gardens at Tudor Place. The garden was maintained by the Peter family over six generations and evolved during that time. The family preferred a more naturalistic style in the garden over the more formal style that you might see at a place like Longwood Gardens.... More
