This is a fun market; unfortunately I was the victim of a heinous highway robbery committed by one “Ma Brown”.
I’m a student and new in town. This was my first time at the market and I stumbled upon Ma Brown’s baked goods stand. She seemed like a nice old lady, very chatty, so I thought I’d buy a mini pie. She said cash was best so I handed her a twenty. The pie in question is about three inches in diameter so I figured it would be five to seven bucks. Wrong. This broad charged me FIFTEEN dollars for a pie the size of my palm.
I thought that was a lot but I thought maybe things are just very expensive here. Wrong again! I went home and googled Ma Brown and LO AND BEHILD found out that she usually charges $4.50 for these godforsaken pies.
This absolute charlatan of a pastry chef price gouged me into the next century. If I never own a home, I blame Ma Brown.
In conclusion, if you’ve a hankering to be financially RUINED, do head on down to see ole Ma Brown. I’m sure she will be delighted to fleece you six ways to Sunday like she did me.

Very little to see. We went midday on Thursday and there were only vendors inside in one short hallway. Definitely not worth the Uber ride from our hotel. Trader Joe's was just around the corner which was more fun to look at.

We always go to local markets when visiting towns to get food for dinners or lunches. There were only two venders selling pre cooked food or take away items for a meal, there was one bakery which featured mostly desserts. There were three butcher shop venders. We were totally expecting more vendors with more options. It was a Sunday afternoon around 4 and all the outside venders were packing up and leaving - they had crafy items it looked like.
If you are looking for more variety and selection walk two blocks to Trader Joes.

Historic old building. Now has a variety of fresh food meat, fruit, flower and other markets. Also had a good chocolate milk shake. Also walked by what smelled like a very good fresh food restaurant.

If you visit Capitol Hill, then make time to savour the delights of the area. There is a metro station close by in case you have to travel in from outside of Washington DC. Not only are there interesting things to buy but there are plenty of places to have refreshments. Allow enough time to stroll around, particularly if you are a shopper like me!

Do not go during extremely hot weather. Vendors offer a big selection of food, clothing, jewelry, home decor, personal care items, etc. A good place to get fresh food to prepare or ready to eat. Has operated here for 150 years.

Eastern Market is a must see for visitors to DC who are interested in real city life. The old market on weekend mornings is like traveling back in time. An eclectic crowd of real locals, politicos, tourists and hipsters frequent this place from about 8am to 3pm Sat and Sunday. Many people I have travelled with have said that the market is the most charming place in DC. Flower stalls, great food, beautiful 1800 century architecture, an incredible flea market with antiques and a old world street market atmosphere. This is the real thing. One of the best joys of DC life. One of the best parts is very, very few tourists go here, you will be with the locals that you never see in the Smithsonian or other parts of town, it is very safe and it is also in a beautiful rather wealthy victorian part of the city with tree covered streets right on Capitol Hill. Do yourself a favor, go to the eastern market metro after you sleep in on the weekend and walk around the neighborhood, you can't miss the market, and you will love it. (just a few stops from the national mall I believe). Every time I am in DC I do, and it always is the most relaxing and interesting morning of the trip. I just hope all the tourists don't learn of it too fast and ruin it :)

When any member of my large extended family visits Washington, the first thing they want to do is go to Eastern Market. Inside the old, and recently completely renovated, market building you will find a great lunch counter with some of the best breakfasts and lunches in town (try to "bluebucks" pancakes or the crabcake sandwich). There are also vendors of fine seafood, meat, produce, flowers, fresh pasta, and prepared foods. On weekends, an eclectic mix of vendors set up outside and across the street. Farmers from surrounding areas bring in their fresh produce, craftspeople and artists sell their wares, and a sort of international flea market takes place--everything from antiques to countless jewelry options. You'll find some great buys on one-of-a-kind merchandise, too. Eastern Market is truly a treasure that everyone from tiny kids to grandparents will enjoy.

Eastern Market suffered a terrible fire on April 30th, but the outside venders are still operating. It is a wonderful location to shop for everything from fresh vegtables to folk art. It still an excellent place for good food and people watching.

Eastern Market and the surrounding Capitol Hill neighborhood might just be the most charming area in Washington, DC. The farmers market every weekend brings incredible fresh fruit and vegetables into DC. Of course the blueberry buckwheat pancakes inside Eastern Market are delicious, but so are the whitefish and nova bagels from the bakery at the other end of the market. For the best coffee in the area head to Peregrine (it is much better than what you will get inside Eastern Market).

Is the market worth a visit on a Friday morning? Any recommendation for breakfast or brunch? Thanks a lot!
Written July 8, 2018
I'm not sure. You may want to contact them directly via e-mail prior to your visit just to make sure. Things change faster than we can keep up with these days.

how much sdoes it cost for visiting and how much does it cost for parking?
Written December 13, 2015
There's no cost to visit Eastern Market and there is no parking other than street and metered parking. If you visit on a Sunday street parking is free. The Eastern Market Metro Station is right across the street from the Market.
