I visited the James A. Garfield Monument in August 2021 during my walk around the US Capitol grounds. President Garfield was assassinated in 1881 as he walked through a train station which stood on the current site of the National Gallery of Art - West Building. He was shot by a disgruntled and mentally ill office seeker. As I researched President Garfield before walking around the monument, I learned that Robert Lincoln (President Lincoln's son) was present at three presidential assassinations (Lincoln, Garfield and McKinley in 1901). Since the US Capitol is closed, it is still worth walking around the Reflecting Pool and seeing the three monuments - Grant, Garfield and the Peace Memorial. Washington DC is full of interesting history everywhere.

I understand that Garfield was only President for a few months, but his story before being elected needs to be better known. I am not going to rehash other reviews, or Wikipedia, but I think this monument is "just another statue" in DC and that is a shame for someone who has a storied history like Garfield. Whether you agree or not with his choices, he had a major influence in the shape of America before, during and after the Civil war.

Nothing very memorable about the Garfield memorial, but it's a nice statue to commemorate the second American president to be assassinated, the president with the second shortest tenure in office, and the last president to have been born in a log cabin. Great location with the Capitol Building in the background.

We stopped at this monument along our walk to the Botanical Gardens and Capital Building. It’s a nice monument to and for an assassinated President. Worth the visit. If you do please get a photo and post here on Trip Advisor, I forgot.

Just in front of the Capitol building is Garfield Circle (yes they do have roundabouts in the USA) on it is the James A. Garfield Monument who was President for only a short time before he was assassinated, a worthy monument and well worth a visit.
