Stopped in for a pick-up during COVID-19. Technically, they were "open" for outside seating, but I still wasn't comfortable staying out in public just yet.
Picked up their Peppercorn Saison - which was nice.
and their Diamonds are Forever - Hazy IPA which was different, but I wasn't a fan of.
and their Citra Lemon Saison -- served chilled (iced) this is one of the MOST refreshing and crisp beers you can't find.
Parking: small lot
Seating: room for 20-30 outdoors w/ distancing
Service: a bit 'cool'
Beers: delicious

Came here as part of a brewery tour. I can see why the tour guides picked this place as the beers were very good.

Not what I expect but a wonderful surprise. (what am I thinking?). It is a brewery and with a nice space inside for beer lovers to sample the beers. If you have to eat something, there is a simple menu for you to order from outside. The place is warm and welcome, staff are friendly and helpful. Even you may not be a beer drinker, it is worth a try.

So... we asked people in the area where some good breweries were and 3 Stars was suggested as one of them. We arrived on a Saturday and they were pretty busy. There wasn't one table available. We stood in the short line and eventually told the guy at the counter to the right of us that we would like to order a flight. He rudely told us we had to wait for the woman at the register (how would we know?!). The woman working the register and taking orders was the only relatively nice person in the establishment. Both men pouring the beer were just plain miserable. When we got our flights a table became opened. Next to our table was a barrel with empty glasses on it. One of the guys working came over, grabbed all of the glasses while talking to himself the whole time about people leaving stuff where they shouldn't, etc. Just plain miserable. He's there to work. That really annoyed me. They close at 7pm on Saturdays, which is pretty early and nothing to be miserable about. My boyfriend wanted to buy some beer to bring home, but we decided against it after witnessing the people who work there. I didn't want anything to do with that place. My boyfriend works at a brewery where people go to hang out because they feel comfortable and like to enjoy good beer and conversation. That definitely wasn't happening here.

I had "Zombie Date Night" a few years ago store-bought from a can. Very delicious beer so I was delighted to find out a couple weeks ago that the brewery is close to me.... actually, even closer than I thought as it's a 5-minute walk from my Grandma's house where I used to live. After visiting my Grandma this past weekend, I stopped by 3 Stars Brewery to buy 3 crowlers of Zombie Date Night (and 2 other crowles), and I learned that this brewery has been there for 8 YEARS!!!! which I find to be pretty odd considering I was living there the entire time they've been in business. Quite frankly, I'm disgusted. I'm a drinker. I was always on the lookout for a bar or hangout near my house & had 3 Stars done ANY kind of advertising or outreach in the area (a predominantly BLACK area), I would have been there every day. I find it really disheartening that they seemingly care more about business of white people who don't even live in that neighborhood, than that of the people who ACTUALLY live there.
Also.... THE. SMELL. Since Covid, they obviously don't have people sitting indoors, so why did it smell like a college campus bar inside? It smelled like a bar where people have puked a bunch, but they try to clean it to get rid of the smell, and the smell is still kinda there. I took my mask off my nose for about 4 seconds to get a better whiff. It smelled like actual garbage & stale beer & puke. Maybe the garbage is from the lot RIGHT NEXT DOOR that houses about 20 trash trucks, but ugh. I don't know how anyone could actually eat there... my stomach kept turning. And I almost forgot: the cat. Like, ok... there's a cat. But it was walking around where THE FOOD was being prepared. Further, the table in front where they help people had a black tablecloth & it was COVERED in cat hair. I cannot explain how disgusting & unprofessional this is.
Oh, and the beer? I ordered 5 crowlers which was around $80. The Zombie Date Night I had 2 years ago was smooth... the raspberry flavor was present without being too sweet, and the chocolate was SO SO smooth & was such a great compliment to this porter. But what I got on Saturday? The raspberry is there but tastes like an afterthought, and the chocolate tastes like someone burnt it which is WHOLLY unpleasant. Now I have 2 & a half more crowlers of it. The only use it has is that the ABV % is so high, i can get so drunk I won't realize how terrible it tastes.

If you live in Virginia this place is really hard to get to. Check your map and GPS. As a beer lover, it was worth the trip. 3 Stars is located in an old warehouse area, and like much of DC, there was trash on the streets with tall weeds and vegetation that hasn’t been cared for in years. Glad I went here in the daytime. Inside the brewery it looks totally different with painted wall art everywhere. On tap 3 Stars has lots of choices. Before I thought of 3 Stars as predominantly IPA, but once inside I found they have a much broader repertoire with some tasty sours, to some browns, ryes, and stouts. Impressive lineup and very good quality beer. Very clear they are passionate about beer and their pursuit of perfection is good for all of us who visit. There was one thing that struck me as really odd and that was the complicated process to get a beer. First I went to the bar where I could read the menu and asked for a beer. The man behind the bar told me, I had to go to the other side and order. So I went over, placed my order, made payment, set up the tab, and then waited. A short while later, my beer showed up. Don’t get me wrong, it works, just seemed strange. What is does is keep overhead down with minimal staff, good for brewery, but it prohibits conversation with the team that pours beer, bad for customers. Serious beer drinkers --put 3 Stars on your to do list.

This place is clearly a little more mature than hellbender. I was at the end of my beer drinking capacity so I had à six ounce taste of something in their pale ale category. Lots of funky beers here with strange flavors. I tasted their pepper corn.... not my thing. My beer was well crafted. Not quite my personal (Seattle) taste, but still good.
The brewery was fairly big. They said that they had multi state distribution.
In all? With a visit. Really friendly people.

So it’s a 15 minute drive out is the city but a fabulous range of beers and a great 80s soundtrack!
Try the Southern Belle. Brown, with a hint of sweet.
